Message from the Principal / Tumuaki

Term four is making for a busy term with many activities being rolled into this term from earlier in the year.  We are trying to reschedule as many activities as possible.

Due to this year’s Covid disruptions, our original plan for holding the Year 8 camp had to be redesigned for 2020.  We are pleased that we are now able to offer two EOTC days for Year 8 students next month.

Our Maori Graduation, that is usually a whole campus event, will still go head but as individual campus schools.  Last night I attended the Mt Roskill Grammar School Graduation.  Congratulations to our past students, and in particular Bronson Taylor (Aramoana) and Gemini Ferrall-Fotuhetule who picked up special awards.

This week, we held our Orientation days for year 6 students who are enrolled to come to Mount Roskill Intermediate School next year.  It was great to meet them all and we look forward to them joining with us in 2021.

Students will soon be involved in their end of year testing and assessments.  This will help provide important information to support the evidence of your child’s progress within the curriculum this year.  This will also be the Year 8 placement testing for students attending MRGS.  Students will be revising their learning in class over the next few weeks.  Please talk to your child about what they are working on with their learning and what they feel they need to practise and revise at home. Your child’s progress will be reported to you at the end of the term.  Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.

Have you noticed that the look of our Newsletter has changed?  We have been working hard behind the scenes on creating this new format which will ultimately end up linking together with our new website which is still currently under construction.

We have a fantastic school that I am very proud to be a part of.  Our Board of Trustees are committed to ensuring that Mount Roskill Intermediate is a safe, high-achieving school.
Everyday it brings a smile to my face to see and listen to the amazing, talented students that we have. Thank you for supporting us by sending your child to MRI, and working with us.

Happy Diwali!

Highlights & Celebrations

Chess Update
Our Chess Team has been very busy in the last month or so!
In the first weekend of the school holidays, our chess team travelled to Tauranga for the two day National Intermediate Schools Chess Championship run by the NZ Chess Federation.
Our team of Abraham, Mantra, Sourav, Pratyush, and Vitaraag, put in a very strong effort at this competition and represented our school well.
It is worth noting that Mt Roskill Grammar’s team came 4th in the secondary division, with all five players being former students of Mt Roskill Intermediate.

Our MRI Chess Team, also competed in the NZ Chess Power Nationals competition, held over Labour weekend.  They can be very proud of themselves, as they came away from this competition with the fantastic result of coming 2nd!  This is a wonderful achievement in what has been a challenging year, with very little ‘game time’ due to COVID.  Three of our Chess team are in Year 7, so we look forward to seeing what else can be achieved next year.
Well done boys!

A special thanks goes to Mr Wayne McDougall for all his time in training the team and also with managing them while away.

Waterpolo Tournament
As the end of day school bell rang on Friday 25th of September and the Term 3 school holidays began, the Mount Roskill Intermediate Waterpolo players committed to a three day tournament at Diocesan School for Girls.  Our first game against the Kowhai Stingrays was a great start with a strong 7-2 win. The team was a combination of Year 7 and Year 8 players from both of our Waterpolo teams and they finished their season with some great Waterpolo and team bonding.

Thank you to all the parents and caregivers for transport and supporting Mount Roskill Intermediate Waterpolo. The Most Valuable Player for 2020 is to be announced at the End of Year Awards assembly.

Speech Competion
Our school Year 8 Speech competition, judged by the Mount Roskill Grammar School English Head of Department, was held recently.  The Year 7 speech competition is currently underway.

The following Year 8 students are to be congratulated for their achievements for their fantastic speeches:

1st   Sourav Dhungel
2nd  Austin Dodd
3rd   Pratyush Khatiwada

Science Fair
The NIWA Auckland Science Fair was held remotely this year.   We are very proud of our budding scientists and the investigations that they have undertaken, with a number of students receiving Highly Commended certificates.

EPrO8 (Engineering, Problem Solving, Innovation)
EPrO8  was held remotely with one of our teams qualifying for the Auckland wide next stage of the competitions. We are very proud of the students who have already competed, demonstrating creativity, thinking skills and innovation.

Otago Problem Solving
Otago Problem Solving Mathematics Challenge:  A large number of students have been awarded Merit and Excellence.  The students with Excellence will now go on to participate in the New Zealand wide final challenge.

Boys Cricket
MRI are in Pool C of the Auckland ACA Cup competition. We played Royal Oak Intermediate in the first game and won convincingly. Sourav 46, Abhi 31 and Muhammad 37 all retired not out, with Usaiyd and Mantra also making good contributions. Some good, if sometimes wayward, bowling restricted Royal Oak’s batsmen and we ended up winning by 103 runs.

Our second match against Auckland Normal Intermediate was played last Thursday. ANI scored 98 which we managed to get in just 7 overs. Major batting contributions from Sourav 44 rtd. Abhi 36 rtd. Muhammad 18 NO.

We therefore qualified for the Auckland Semi Finals which were played yesterday. Put in By Kings, our batting started strongly with us eventually making 141.  Six batters reached double figures.  Sourav 32. Abhi 20. Muhammad 17. Ayub 20. Pratyush 16 and Mantra 15. However with losing 6 wickets within the grace period, Kings had an 18 run start. We kept their run rate in check until they needed 46 off the last 5 overs. It went right down to the wire. Unfortunately, Kings made their target winning off the last ball.

Third place in Auckland is extremely creditable and with an ounce of luck we could have been playing off in the final.  Congratulations to the 10 boys who played in the matches.  Thanks to Tarun Nethula for the extra coaching support and to our parent supporters.
