Message from the Principal / Tumuaki

It has been my privilege to attend both the Y13 and ECE & Year 6 Māori graduations recently.

Mãori Graduation is a really special annual event where we celebrate and honour the journey, the mahi and achievement of all our Māori students across the campus in completing a new or final stage in their schooling. Due to our unprecedented year of COVID, each school has held these events individually this year to help keep our school and community whānau safe.  We hope to be able to come back together next year. Our school Māori Graduation will take place later this week.

We also look forward to having whānau join us for our upcoming Awards and Year 8 Graduation next week. If your child is receiving an Award, we will let you know beforehand.

As a School we recently acknowledged Diwali with a variety of activities.   Special thanks to the students who led and shared their culture and celebrations with others.  We have had a beautiful Rangoli in our entrance way as a depiction of strength, good luck and generosity.

Year 8 EOTC days were also held recently.  In our repeated rescheduling of the original Camp experiences, due to COVID, we were able to offer a small taster of activities that we were able to access and provide.  (Please see report in Highlight section)

We are so proud of the resilience our students have all demonstrated, time and time again.  They have risen above the disappointment of constant rescheduling or cancellation of activities and events and looked for the silver lining.  They have been selfless and hopeful, making the most of the squashed in activities and opportunities that have been able to occur and finding unique ways to learn and have experiences.

Next Monday will be a ‘moving day Mufti Day’.  Classrooms and teachers who need to move learning spaces will take place on this day.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the many past students who were acknowledged in the Mt Roskill Grammar Senior Prizegiving giving held recently.  We are proud to follow your continued development as learners, leaders, artists, musicians, athletes and citizens.

Ehara taku toa, he toa takitini.

My success should not be bestowed onto me alone, as it was not individual success but success of a collective

Aroha nui,
Kristen Walsham

Highlights & Celebrations

Athletics Day
On Friday 6th November we held our annual school Athletics day.
All students were able to participate in Shot Put, Discus, Long Jump and High Jump. Semi-finals and finals were held for the 100m and 200m sprints.
Despite a few showers, everyone participated with enthusiasm.
The day finished with some exciting track finals and very close finishes.
34 students were then selected to represent the school at the Central Zone Athletics tournament at Mt Smart Stadium which was held on Wednesday 18th November. The students all performed really well, especially Haaris Bhutta who placed 5th in the Year 7 Boys 100m final and Hibeam To’a who won the Year 8 Boys Shot Put.
An outstanding achievement!

Year 8’s Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC) Activities
Outdoor education is an important part of the curriculum at Mt Roskill Intermediate and we are proud of the activities we offer students.  The programme is usually action packed with a wide range of activities including a camp each year.  Unfortunately, due to COVID we had to restructure the programme but we still managed to offer students a selection of exciting opportunities.

On Wednesday 18th November, 91 students took part in a water safety programme at the Wero Whitewater Park, Manukau City. They participated in activities that focus on water safety, teamwork, risk-taking and personal excellence.  Students experienced the power of water first hand when they had to do a river crossing before learning how to paddle a raft down a grade 2 river.

On Friday 20th November, 100 students were given the opportunity to take part in The Croc Tower, high ropes experience at Rocket Ropes, Manukau City. Students participated in a range of activities aimed at building confidence through overcoming challenges in a high ropes climbing environment.

Over the two days other students took part in numerous activities at school including: Team Building, Team Challenges, Archery, Camp cooking, Games and Rock climbing.

The students had two days of challenging but enjoyable activities and went home at the end of each day feeling tired but happy.

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Anna Sibi for placing 2nd in the International School Division of the Korean Speech Competition run by the Korean Education Centre and Korean Consulate.

Epro8
We had two teams make it to the final for Epro8: one Year 7 team, Eva McKinlay, Tilly Clark, Ewan Gibson and Isla Kennedy who did well but were not placed, and one Year 8 team Phineas Ou, Pratyush Khatiwada, Colin Loke and Spike Murray who came 3rd equal.

Well done to all!

Does your MRI Child have any Highlights or Celebrations, that you’d like to share with our school community?  If so, please email the details through to office@mri.school.nz and we would love to share in the celebrations with you and your whānau!
