Message from the Principal
Ngā mihi o te tau hau,

Welcome to all of our new families and those who have children returning to our wonderful school. It has been a great start to the school year and fantastic to see so many parents here at the school on the first day. We hope you and your child found the Pōwhiri welcoming.
Thank you for choosing to send your child to Mount Roskill Intermediate School, we really look forward to working with you!

Over the last few years we have all experienced new history being made. We are so excited to begin this new year without Alert levels, traffic light systems or in the immediate recovery mode for flooding and cyclones! We know our community has had a difficult time and many are still working through the challenges of the past years. Please let us know if you need support as your child starts this new school year.
We are stronger together.

Our teachers have been looking forward to meeting you all and we are excited about the year ahead.
We want all our students to be happy here at MRI, feel safe, know that they are valued, and experience great learning. We will be working hard together for this to happen.

As per the new Government requirements on schools, our students will continue to have Reading, Writing and Mathematics learning time daily. This will take place as specific learning blocks and will also be explicitly integrated into other curriculum areas such as Inquiry and Specialisation areas e.g Food Technology.
Along with our great teaching and learning programmes, intermediate school offers many opportunities for students to try new things. There are many sporting and cultural activities as well as areas to help out in such as the library and leadership roles. All of these add to your child’s education, building skills and confidence. It is a busy time of year when students have a lot of information coming at them about signing up for activities. This is a great way to begin to prepare students for secondary school where they have multiple options open to them. Students and families are able to keep an eye on the student notices via our App or website. Here is a link: Student Notices

Please let us know if there is any specific information about your child that we need to know. We can make a big difference to your child's learning when we work together to support them.

Meet the Teacher/Staff Evening: We would love to meet you on Thursday 15 February 5.30- 6.30pm. This will be an opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher and wider school staff and members of the School Board, along with other families. It is an informal meeting time where you will also be able to have a short presentation in the classroom that will answer any of your questions.

We are fortunate to have appointed additional high quality staff. We welcome:
Mrs Natalie Wright - Year 8 Teacher and Rimu House Learning Leader
Mr Michael Wells - Year 7 Teacher and Kauri House Learning Leader
Ms Hannah Ross - Year 7 Teacher
Mr Anthony Uili - Year 8 Teacher
Ms Amy Hutton - Year 7 Teacher
Mrs Tracey Matthews - Food Technology Teacher

We have a wonderful team of staff here at Mount Roskill Intermediate. We all love this school and community and are excited to work with you.

Attendance makes a huge difference to achievement. If your child misses one day of school a week, this means that they have missed 40 school days over the year. This adds up to 8 weeks of school and puts their learning at risk. If your child is sick, please ensure you report their absence as early as possible through either our Website, School App, by email to the class teacher and to attendance@mri.school.nz or by phoning the office on 09 620 8508.

Cell Phones: You may be aware of the new government initiative relating to cell phones in schools. If your child needs to have a cellphone while travelling to and from school, they are required to hand it in via their classroom teacher for the duration of the day. These will then be kept at the School Office. No cell phones are allowed to remain with a child during the school day. They must be handed in. If a child does not hand a phone in, it will be sent to the School Office and an adult will need to collect it.
If you need to get important information to your child please contact the school office who will ensure that your child receives the information that they need.

If you are visiting the school, can you please make sure that you sign in at the administration area first, and do not go directly to classrooms or into the playground. This is part of our school Health and Safety management. Thank you for your support with this.

School swimming starts next week. Your child's teachers will let them know the day of the week when they need to bring their swimming togs.

School is open on Monday, but will be closed on Tuesday 6th February for Waitangi Day.

We look forward to working with you this year.

Ko ia kāhore nei I rapu, tē kitea. He who does not seek will not find.

On a sad note, I want to let you know that Mrs Jill Grant, long -serving staff member in our school office, is not well and her condition is considered terminal. It is likely that she may have just a short time to live

Mrs Grant has served our school and community for almost forty years. She has been the friendly voice at the end of the phone and supported many families with transiting between schools, enrolments, uniforms, and helping students and families in a multitude of ways. She is a special treasure to many of us and a valued part of our community.

If you would like to write to Mrs Grant, we can deliver the letter on your behalf. We will be setting up a drop station at the school reception for any messages/ cards etc that people would like to have passed onto her.
Helpful Information for the school year:
MRI Communications
Our main means of communication to you comes via email and through our school App. All communication can also be found on our website.
Our School App provider is SchoolappsNZ. See the flyer below with details on how to connect to our app.
If your contact details, such as email address or phone number, change at any stage, please inform the office as soon as possible.
Attendance
Children are expected to be in their rooms by 8.45am, ready for school to begin at 8.50am. Punctuality is important. Any absences need to be explained. If your child is unwell and won’t be in at school for the day, please ensure you report their absence as early as possible through either our Website, School App, by email to the class teacher and attendance@mri.school.nz or by phoning the office on 09 620 8508. You can leave a voice message if you call outside our office hours.
Uniform
All students are expected to arrive and leave school in their correct school uniform. Full uniform is is to be worn to and from school. Only on days they have PE or sport, MRI PE uniform can be worn to and from school.
If for some reason your child cannot wear the correct uniform, they need to advise their teacher with a note or email from their parent/caregiver.
Sun Hats
We strongly encourage our students to wear a sun hat while outside during break times and when participating in PE and sport. Plain black caps are available to purchase for $10 each at the school office.
Naming of your child’s uniform
Please clearly name your child’s uniform. This helps us greatly with enabling us to return misplaced garments back to their rightful owner.
Unclaimed items at the end of each term are repurposed or disposed of.
School Lunches
MRI are a water only school so students are not to bring juice, fizzy or flavoured drinks to school. Your child can bring their own named water bottle or we have hands-free water fountains available for use around the school.
We work with Ezlunch who provide quality, fresh-made food to purchase. If you order by 9am on the day, your child’s lunch will be delivered to the school by lunchtime. Click the link to find out details on how to order and to view their menu HERE
NO Driving onto the school campus grounds
For the safety of all our students, as well as our neighbouring Primary and Grammar students, no one is to drive into our school grounds/carpark at the start of the school day or the end of the school day. If you drop off or pick up your child, this must be done on one of the surrounding streets. Only staff are allowed to drive onto school grounds.
Our Denbigh Ave bridge is still closed to vehicles but is currently open to pedestrians. We are working with the Ministry of Education around the bridge replacement. While planning is underway, full works are not expected to be completed until the end of this year.
