Message from the Principal
Kia ora koutou,

This term has continued to fly!
It was great to see so many families attend our Talanoa Ako Learning Conversations last month and engage with the learning that your child is doing. Thank you.
This week we held a Pasifika Fono that had a Reading at Home learning focus. Thank you to those families that came along. Our Pasifika Young Leaders did a great job preparing for this event. We are stronger and make greater progress when we work together.

Students have been busy auditioning for our Production ‘Annie Jr’ that will take place later in the year. This has now been cast and students will begin rehearsing with Mr Whitney. We have an amazing amount of talent and creativity!

Our recent Year 8 Outdoor Education days were a great success with students engaging in both on site and off site activities. It was wonderful to see the teamwork, determination and resilience with activities. Well done to everyone involved. A big thank you to Mr McBride for all of his organisation.

Congratulations to our girls Tag team who are back to back Central Zone Champions. Our Mixed Tag Team won the recent Dilworth Sports exchange, demonstrating great talent and teamwork.
Special congratulations to Ethan from Room 14 who competed in the Swimming Inter-zone, after winning a number of CentralZone swimming events. Well Done!
Thank you to all our coaches, teachers and parents for supporting our teams this term, we really appreciate it.

As you will be aware, there is a national focus on attendance. For students to learn, they need to be at school. Please let us know as soon as possible by contacting the office if there are circumstances that we need to be aware of. We are excited to welcome Mrs Nurfifah Nazaruddin who will be joining the administration team next term, with a particular priority on following up on daily attendance. Our average school ‘regular’ attendance (attending school between 90-100% of the time) at the end of this term is sitting at 61%. It is important to be aware that even at 90% attendance, your child is missing one day of school every two weeks. This equates to 20 days or four weeks of learning missed in a year. We currently have 23% of students who are sitting between 80-90% attendance. Students starting late in the year and having additional time off between school holidays greatly impacts the attendance statistics and the student's learning.

At the end of this term we are farewelling Mr Mark Prendergast who will be travelling overseas on a new adventure. He will be missed. We are excited to welcome Ms Karishma Kumar as the new teacher of Room 10. Ms Kumar is a past student of MRI who is looking forward to coming back.

Ms Hutton, Room 11 teacher will be commencing her maternity leave early, at the end of this term. We wish her and her partner all the best over this exciting time. We have needed to split Room 11 amongst the other year seven classrooms. We are appreciative of the families support with this.

Students have been working hard on their learning this term. Congratulations to all of our students for their effort and work and to those who have received end of term awards. It always makes my heart sing to see the beautiful enthusiasm and kindness of our students.
Next term continues to bring many exciting events and new opportunities.
All the best to those who are celebrating Eid al-Fitr.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break. Term 2 commences Monday 29th April.
We look forward to continuing to work with you next term. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Salam Alaikum,

Kristen Walsham

We are excited to invite you to attend the Mt Roskill Grammar School Open Day on Thursday 23 May from 3.30pm – 7.00pm.

You will meet with the staff who will be supporting your child and find out more about our co-curricular opportunities. I will give a presentation at 3.30pm, 4.30pm and 6pm about our school.

At Mt Roskill Grammar School, the vision for our students is for them to become successful and powerful learners, equipped with the attitudes, qualities and qualifications to excel. Our teachers are experts in their subject and are skilled facilitators. Our students also excel in NCEA, well in advance of national averages.

Our academies for 2025 include Sports Performance & Performing Arts. We have two advanced learning classes in years 9 and 10 with the remainder mixed ability. Some students in year 10 may be accelerated into NCEA Level 1 Maths and Science, selected from across a range of year 9 classes at the end of year 9.

Free travel for 5 to 12 year olds and half-price travel for 13 to 24 year olds on AT bus, train and ferry services will end on 30 April 2024, in line with the government’s decision to withdraw funding for these concessions.
This means that from Wednesday 1 May:
5 to 12 year olds will no longer travel for free on weekdays and will instead pay a child concession (at least 40% off adult fares). They will continue to travel for free on weekends. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.
13 to 15 year olds will stop receiving the half-price child fares discount and instead switch to paying full child fares (at least 40% off an adult fare during weekdays, and free travel on weekends) from 1 May. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.
