School Photographs will be taken of all classrooms in the Morning, before we finish early.
Welcome back to Term Two!

Together we have achieved a lot over the last few months.

We have many exciting events coming up this term, including Matariki celebrations, Book Fair week and Art Week where we live, breathe and create art that is displayed in an amazing Art exhibition. Our students are working hard on their learning and it is great to see their focus. Our support programmes for maths, reading and language support are well underway as well as extension maths and writing programmes. Written Reports will go home at the end of this term highlighting the progress and achievement of your child. If you have any questions or areas you would like to discuss, please contact your child's teacher in the first instance.

This week our Year Seven Kapa Haka roopu have travelled to Waitangi to visit the treaty grounds and significant cultural locations, making strong connections as a group as well as learning together.

As part of our school's Emergency Response Plan, last week we held our school lockdown and evacuation training. We work with an independent company, Harrison Tew, who are experts in this field and work with many schools preparing us to be best prepared for all situations. All of our students and staff did an amazing job with the training and follow up drill. Can you please ensure that your contact details are current and up to date. If your contact details have changed, it is important that we know. Please email office@mri.school.nz, call us on 09 620 8508, or use our school app function to update your contact details.

With the Autumn weather well and truly upon us, colds and flu are on the rise. If your child is unwell, please let us know by contacting your child's teacher, the office or notify us through our school app.

Winter Sports have kicked off this term with the Netball and Waterpolo seasons all having started. It is great to see so many of our students involved in these teams, showing great passion for their chosen sports. Our Chess team is busy training with our wonderful coach, Mr Wayne McDougall. There are a number of upcoming chess competitions that they will participate in.
MRI staff and students have been busy preparing for the upcoming winter Central Zone sporting competitions. Girls and Boys Futsal were first up and were competitive in their respective competitions. Over the next couple of weeks, our teams will be representing the school at Central Zones Waterpolo, Rugby and Football. Thank you to the students for representing MRI so well and doing us proud.

Next Friday 17th May is Pink Shirt Day where students are encouraged to wear pink to show we are committed to creating a kinder, more inclusive Aotearoa, where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. We all have a role to play in creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Pink shirt day is about supporting the National Pink Shirt movement of #pinkshirtdaynz raising awareness that together we can stand with those who have been affected by bullying and promote a culture of inclusivity, kindness and understanding. At MRI we believe that everyone should feel safe and valued. It is all of our responsibility to ensure this.

Wednesday 29th May, 6-7pm we are joining with our other Kāhui Ako Schools (MRPS, Dominion Road School, Three Kings School, Hillsborough Primary and MRGS) with a Digital fono, brought to us by ‘Digital Discipline’. It is a free presentation, hosted at MRI, to support and inspire individuals and families grappling with the challenges of social media and screen time. It will focus on providing tangible tools to empower individuals and families to address the challenges of social media issues/addiction. Please see the information flyer below.

As part of our Matariki Celebrations this year we will be creating a professionally produced video with our Kāhui schools. We are honoured to have been granted permission to use the beautiful waiata ‘He Kākano āhau’, by writer and composer Hohepa Tamehana. This project will be launched for Matariki 2024 and shared within the school communities including at hui and uploaded to Youtube for sharing via the schools social media platforms.

Our Production of ‘Annie’, is now underway with practices taking place weekly.
Our cast have been finalised and they are now busy, learning and practising their lines!
