Welcome back to Term Three!
We kicked off the term with Talanoa Ako, Learning Conversations after Progress Reports were sent home at the end of last term . This was an important time to discuss the progress your child has made and reset their learning goals. Thank you to everyone who came along. We want to continue to work with you to ensure that your child makes the most progress possible with their learning. We welcome your questions and appreciate your input and any additional information that might be important for us to know. We are stronger together!
It was a privilege to have New Zealand Māori Men’s and Women’s Under 20 Football teams and personnel in our school last Friday spending time with our students, inspiring and motivating them! We welcomed them with a short Pōwhiri before they spent time in classes, including with some of our Girls footballers, Kapa Haka, ESOL and other classes. They also got involved in playground games, riding bikes and learning waiata…What a special, awesome day!
We love the Values that sit behind their mahi and appreciate this community connection!

This week we have held our Open Day, showcasing our facilities and the many and varied opportunities for prospective families that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. We appreciate the involvement of our wonderful students in this event, representing our school well. We are looking forward to welcoming current year 6 students to MRI next year.

This is the time of year where we analyse our school achievement and progress data. This helps us to continue to target and ensure that students are making the most progress possible. It is encouraging to see the progress evident across the core learning areas. The last three ‘Covid years’ have had an impact on schooling for many students. As a school it is important for us to reflect on the learning programmes and be responsive to the needs that our students have. This year we have implemented a number of additional support programmes to support both Mathematics and Literacy to help with the impact on learning.
We know that as well as students being engaged in targeted learning programmes, it is important that your child knows and understands the goals that they are working on. Thank you for your involvement in the recent Learning conversations last week. If you have been unable to meet with your child’s teacher, please make contact with them to find a time when they can meet with you and your child.
Our Mt Roskill Campus Schools Pasifika Fono will be held on the 9th of August (Please see the flyer below). This will be a chance for families to have their enrolment documents for MRGS signed by a Justice of the Peace, as well as watching the MRI and MRPS Culture Groups perform. Please bring your forms on the night and get your enrolments for MRGS sorted early. Year Six students enrolling with us for next year can also get their enrolments sorted on the night.
Our Winter sport continues through until later this term. We are proud of the ongoing commitment, effort and sportsmanship evident across all codes.
Later next month (Week 5) a group of students will fly down to Queenstown for our annual Ski-trip where they will spend the week honing their skiing skills at Cardrona and The Remarkables. We wish them good weather and exciting learning!
Finally, just a reminder that from the end of this week, I will be undertaking the APPA (Auckland Primary Principals Association) Sabbatical/Travelling Fellowship, for 10 school weeks, after our MRIS Open Days. This was deferred from 2020. Deputy Principal Mrs Tracey Hughes will be Acting Principal in my absence. I am excited to undertake this wonderful opportunity and look forward to the refreshment and learning that it will bring. I know the school is well placed to continue to function highly in my absence.
