Message from the Principal
Welcome back to term Three!

It has been great to see a strong turnout for the Parent Teacher Learning Conversations (Talanoa Ako). This was particularly important with the new curriculum implementation, assessment changes and new National Reporting changes.
Last week we held a parent workshop to help explain the changes and what your child’s report will show and why.
Thank you to everyone who came along to the session. We will be working through some of the hiccups in moving to the new reporting platform, ready for the end of year reports.
On Thursday 13th August at 9.30 in the Library, we will be holding our next parent workshop which will have a maths focus on what is going to be taught in Terms 3 and 4. Please see the attached flyer.
Next week we have our school Open Days which showcase the many and varied opportunities for prospective families that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. We are looking forward to welcoming current Year 6 students to MRI next year. If you would like to attend or know of someone who may be interested, please see the attached information for more detail.
Enrolments are currently being accepted for both in-zone and out of zone. The out of zone enrolment cut-off date is Wednesday, 2nd September, 3pm 2026.
As you will have noticed, we continue to have a large number of building works underway around our school. This is very exciting, but has greatly impacted our parking and access into the school.
Our Denbigh Ave bridge, which was temporarily closed as a result of the Auckland anniversary fooding, is scheduled for completion at the end of August this year. This is a significant infrastructure project. We are grateful to the Ministry of Education for the management of this project.

Another massive building project underway is a redesign of our school hall roofing, due to water tightness. This significant work will continue through until the end of the year. We are incredibly relieved that the contractors are able to work around our school production in the last week of Term 3, which will allow us limited access to the hall for this. Staff parking is greatly reduced due to the scaffolding, particularly with the ongoing construction of the bridge still in progress. We kindly remind families that access via the shared driveway is only outside of peak school times. Please pick up and drop your children off outside of the school grounds using the surrounding streets.
This term we are excited to have a number of International Students join us. This is a wonderful way to connect with other students as they build their English Language and learn about New Zealand.
As part of this we welcomed a large group of students this week from Korea, for ten days, with a whakatau. A second group from Taiwan will join us for eight days from week four.
Congratulations to our "Break Crew' who entered their first Auckland Breaking Community battle, 'Zero to Break'. This was held at the end of the school holidays at Movementum Dance Studio, run by Andy Choi from Auckland Breakers. They entered the Rookie category and placed in Top 16, this was a fantastic result!

Last week we participated in the 2026 Mt Roskill Student Art Showcase, alongside our other local schools. We had a wide range of art on display. It was a wonderful celebration of art in our Mt Roskill backyard, which is so important to foster in our schools. Congratulations to all of our students who had work selected for the exhibition.

Also last week, four student teams participated in the Round 5 of the University of Auckland Mathematics Challenge, hosted at St Peter’s College. The questions faced this round were particularly tough, but our students rose to the challenge and achieved amazing results across the board with Year 8 A: 1st Place (Year 8 Competition), Year 8 B: 2nd Place (Year 8 Competition), Year 7 A: 2nd Place (Year 7 Competition). Along with the competition, students had the opportunity to hear from guest speaker David Ratliff, an economist from the University of Auckland. He shared fantastic insights on how mathematics plays a vital role across all university degrees—proving that those problem-solving skills really do open doors to endless possibilities! Congratulations to our students for their hard work and incredible achievements.
Special congratulations go to Year 7 student Lexyan who was recently asked to speak at a large event, run by Mana Mokopuna, to celebrate the work of outgoing Children's Commissioner Claire Achmad. Lexyan spoke about his connection with Claire through the Halberg Games. He was one of only four young people asked to speak at the event that was full of very high profile adults, and he was very much the youngest. Feedback from the organiser was that Lexyan’s speech was beautifully presented and the perfect mix of being well thought through and planned, but also from the heart.
We have had our Term 2 attendance results come in from the ministry and were very encouraged to see our regular attendance was up 4% from this time last year. 73% of our students were at school above 90% of the time. This continues the upward trend in attendance we have seen in the last 3 years. Our chronic attendance was the lowest it has been since before Covid.

Earlier this week our boys competed at CZ Netball. Both teams competed well with our year 7s placing 3rd overall in their grade. Congratulations.

This week, our students who will be heading off to AIMS later in the term, fundraised with a ‘Mega Bake sale’. Our students, families and staff baked up a wonderful selection of tasty treats to sell. We are incredibly thankful to all of our families, staff and students that contributed and took part.

We are excited to have been awarded a council creatives grant to enable us to upgrade our fale by the library area and have local carver and parent of the school create a pasifika inspired carving for our school entrance.
We would love to have families involved in the development of the carving ideas at our upcoming fono on 27th August. Keep your eye out for the promotional flyer. We are grateful to the local council for supporting this creative initiative.

Continuing on from the amazing books that were produced as part of our Kāhui Ako, we will be continuing to publish student writing. We are actively encouraging students to submit work for consideration on different topics and themes. Over the next term we will look to share some of the fabulous writing that is being created.
This beautiful extended metaphor poem was created by a year 7 student and submitted for our recent Matatiki poetry competition:

Hiwa-i-te-rangi
Hiwa-i-te-rangi is a giant glowing engine,
She ignites a room as she pounces in,
She is a heavenly choir, warm and safe,
She runs on the aspirations, hopes, dreams, and wishes of those who see her in the night sky.
