The last few weeks have been action packed with many different activities taking place including class speech competitions, a multitude of central zone sport days, MATHEX, AIMS and of course great learning!
Throughout this term and last term, our dedicated Netball players, Basketball and Water Polo teams have continued to play and represent the school week in and week out in the rain, cold, wind and sunshine. As the playing seasons come to a close, I would like to particularly acknowledge the dedication to training and teamwork that has been evident. I am really proud of the efforts of our teams. A special thank you to the staff and the coaches who make these opportunities possible. The support from parents with encouragement and enthusiasm on the sidelines is appreciated. Thank you. To see our recent sporting successes, see our sporting update below.
Celebrating Writing Progress: This term, our students have made fantastic progress in their writing.
This progress has been evident in the way students crafted their sentences in the Year Seven speech semifinals as well as in wider forms of writing, such as the poetry competitions we have held. It’s wonderful to see how these new strategies are helping our learners become more confident and expressive writers.
Our upcoming production of Moana Jr in the final stages of preparation before their amazing performances take place in the last week of Term Three. We are so proud of all of our students. Please make sure you secure your tickets. If you haven’t already done so, tickets can be purchased through Kindo or at the School Office.

Last Thursday, MRI hosted our Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships jersey presentation evening. It was an evening recognising our student athletes and the sacrifice and work it's taken from them and their families to get them to AIMS. We are immensely proud of the work, effort and dedication our students have put into their training and fundraising before heading off to represent MRI in Tauranga this week. A big thank you to the staff, parents, managers, coaches and volunteers for all of their hard work with the teams. We are also hugely appreciative of all the family support we had over the week and in the lead up to the event. We will share photos and highlights next week.

Congratulations to our brilliant mathletes who represented us at the Auckland Mathex Competition recently. Mr Coffey took four fantastic teams to compete against the best students in Auckland. Mathex is notorious for being an intense, fast-paced event that tests both speed and problem-solving under serious pressure. While our teams didn't place this time, they gave it everything, worked brilliantly together, and made us incredibly proud with their effort and attitude.

We are excited that our Denbigh Ave bridge has now been completed and is just awaiting final railings and inspection before being opened for use. This has been a massive engineering project to reinstate the bridge after the 2023 Auckland Anniversary floods. The project has been well managed by the Ministry of Education to future proof the design and construction and we are grateful for their work.
The new bridge contains an artistic depiction on the railings of Hape’s Stingray which is significant to our area. The stingray is seen as a kaitiaki (guardian).
The Campus schools have commissioned three Pou (tall carvings) to represent each of the three schools to be added to the sides of the bridge. Consultation on these started back in 2024. It will be exciting to have all of these elements now start to come together.
Once the bridge is reopened, barrier gates restricting driving through the campus will be reinstated.
Vehicle access via the bridge to the Intermediate School will only be available outside of peak hours. Electric gates are in the process of being installed to help manage this. There is now full pedestrian access on both sides of the bridge.
As you will be aware, there is a great deal of sickness around. While attendance for students is important, we encourage you to keep your child at home when they are sick. Thank you for letting us know when your child is unwell.
As mentioned in the letter you have received recently from us, one of our Year 8 students in the Tennyson Centre, Jason Madanu, has passed away unexpectedly following a period of illness. Jason was a beautiful soul who was kind and creative. He has been a special part of MRI, our Tennyson Centre and school whānau.
Any messages or cards for the whānau can be dropped to the office. We are looking at holding a mufti next Friday 18th September to support the family. For those who wish to donate, all koha received will go directly to the family.

Last Monday night saw the netball season wrap up for the year, with all teams playing their final playoff game. It’s been an incredibly successful season for MRI with 4 teams participating weekly, alongside our teams achieving awesome results.
Year 8A - First in the A Grade, section 1.
Year 8B - Third in the B Grade, section 2.
Year 7A - 5th in the A Grade, section 1.
Year 7B - Third in the B Grade, section 1.
Special mention must go to the Year 8A team, officially the best team in the Monday night Windmill Rd competition. We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved. A massive thank you must go to our coaches: Leah, Lucy, Iresha, Candy and Mariel for all their hard work and dedication. Our coaches have been absolutely fantastic and we are incredibly appreciative of their hard work for our teams. Well done girls on an awesome season and your dedication and effort.

The last couple of weeks have been packed with fantastic sporting action for our Central Zone teams. Off the back of a strong showing at Central Zone Cross Country, MRI had 5 athletes qualify for Inter-zones. Our team did an awesome job competing in cold conditions. They showed considerable heart and determination to complete the 3km route for the year 7s and the 3.5km route for the Year 8s.
Notable results: Ollie 13th in the Year 7 boys, Nilay 14th in the Year 8 boys, Nela 25th in the Year 8 girls. All 3 results are remarkable achievements given the level of the competition. We are immensely proud of them.

Last Monday, MRI competed at CZ Rugby League in 3 grades- U55 boys, Open Boys and Open Girls. The Open Boys placed 5th overall. The Open Girls won all their games by comfortable margins including the final 11-4, qualifying for Auckland Champs and consolidating their back to back champion status!. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement. A massive thank you to Mr Uili, Mr Du Plessis, Cole, Reiley and Mr McBride for all their coaching.

As part of the lead up to AIMS, MRI recently attended the Takapuna Tipu football tournament. With a crop of our players attending the pre-AIMS Futsal tournament the same day, the team was set up as a development side. This saw some young year 7s mixed in with some more experienced year 8s, to build depth as the football program starts to look ahead to next year. As a pre-AIMs football tournament, the quality of the sides involved were high and the competition was tough. The boys battled hard and showed massive progress throughout the day.
Recently our Girls’ Futsal Team competed at the Auckland IZ Futsal Champs. They progressed undefeated to the semis, ultimately losing the final to place 2nd overall in all of Auckland. Congratulations to the team and Miss Golding for all their hard work, it has clearly paid off.
