Message from the Principal
Kia ora koutou,

Welcome back to Term Two!

We have many exciting events coming up this term, including Book Fair, Sports Camp and Matariki celebrations.

It is wonderful to see our students demonstrating such great focus and dedication to their learning. Our support initiatives—including acceleration programmes for Mathematics, Reading, and English Language Learners—are now well established.
In addition to these supports, our Maths and English extension programmes are officially in progress. We are also proud to have a number of students participating in MATHEX, the University of Auckland Mathematics competition, while others prepare to sit the first of the Otago Problem Solving Challenges next week.
Over the next couple of weeks students will be sitting the new Ministry of Education SMART Tests (Student Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting Tool ). This is a digital tool designed for twice‑yearly assessment. It measures progress in reading, writing and maths, aligned with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum. A link to the Ministry of Education information booklet for parents is attached.

Due to all of the changes with assessment and reporting that is taking place nationally, we have made the decision as a school to change the platform that we use as a school (SMS) for recording attendance, student learning records and achievement reports. We are moving to a platform called ‘HERO’ which we believe is more advanced in the changes that schools are required to make in terms of reporting. If any of your contact details have changed since the end of last term, please let us know.
This week we have had a group of students undertaking our inaugural Tongariro Crossing trip. This has been led by Deputy Principals Mr McBride and Mr Maskell, supported by Mrs Vashi and Mr DuPlessis. The group did this under the guidance of a wonderful guide from Adventure Outdoors Tongariro NZ . It has been an exciting adventure for the students participating, to hike one of the treasure trails of New Zealand. This is a trip that we are looking to continue to offer to our students as part of our Outdoor Education opportunities.
The first week of Term Two also saw our after-school football and tag leagues kick off, held here at MRI with the backing of Sport Auckland and Foundation North. The leagues have been implemented to encourage our students to be more active. As part of the project, all refereeing is being done by Mount Roskill Grammar School students. There are still a few sports available in both leagues; sign-ups are via Kindo.
Basketball league kicks off next week after school with RYZ, a strong, well-established community club that has supported many players from grassroots through to representative pathways.

Winter Sports are now beginning to kick off. It is great to see so many of our students involved in teams, showing great passion for their chosen sports. We are grateful to the wonderful parents who have made this possible with their involvement, managing and coaching.

Our Chess team is busy working towards a number of upcoming chess competitions that they will participate in. Mt Roskill Intermediate is hosting one of the Chess Power tournaments later this term.

Coming up on Friday 15th May is Pink Shirt Day where students are encouraged to wear pink to show we are committed to creating a kinder more inclusive Aotearoa where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.
We all have a role to play in creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Pink shirt day is about supporting the National Pink Shirt movement of #pinkshirtdaynz raising awareness that together we can stand with those who have been affected by bullying and promote a culture of inclusivity, kindness and understanding. At MRI we believe that everyone should feel safe and valued. It is all of our responsibility to ensure this.

With the Autumn weather well and truly upon us, colds and flu are on the rise. If your child is unwell and won’t be coming to school, please let us know by contacting your child's teacher, the office or notify us through our school app.
As we did in Term One, this term each family will be receiving an email that details their child's attendance percentage and number of missed days. This is to help you keep on top of how much school (if any) has been missed. Thank you for your continued support in your child attending school as much as possible. Term One was our highest ‘Regular’ attendance in a number of years, 78% of our students attended school above 90% of the time.

Our Production of ‘Moana Jr’, is now underway with practices taking place weekly. Our cast have been finalised and they are now busy, learning and practising their lines. It is going to be another fabulous showcase of the talent we have here at MRI!

Just a reminder Anzac Day is tomorrow (Saturday, April 25), but the public holiday will be observed on Monday, April 27.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
For the fallen, League Ode
