Message from the Acting Principal
Kia ora koutou,

As we come to the end of a very busy Term 1, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for making it such a successful one. Starting back after a big break over the summer holidays is a challenge, let alone a whole new school for our Year 7's who, I must say, have settled in beautifully.
It really has been a busy term with many things happening and it's nice to take the time to reflect on some of the wonderful things that took place this term - many successful sporting events, production auditions are well under way, lots of focused learning, Talanoa Ako Learning Conversations, swimming lessons, performance groups starting up and let's not forget the special FIFA event held at MRI recently. See our list of Term 1 Successes below.
It really is heartwarming to see the students moving out of their comfort zones and having a go. Term 2 promises to be as equally busy!

At the end of this term we farewell Miss Ross who is heading off on an overseas adventure, Mrs Lata who is moving to teach at high school and our counsellor Becky Sly. We appreciate all that these wonderful people have done for our students.
We are also farewelling Mrs Janet Colling, our ESOL teacher, who has been at MRI for more than 30 years. Mrs Colling has been the friendly face for students, many of whom are experiencing life in a NZ school for the first time. We wish Mrs Colling all the best in her retirement. She is a real taonga who we will dearly miss.

In terms 2 and 3, we will have two teacher only days where all of our staff will be attending professional development around structured literacy which is compulsory for all schools to implement under the new curriculum refresh. Those dates are Friday 6 June and Friday 1 August. The school will be closed for instruction so you will need to make alternative arrangements for your child on those days.

Jewellery - some of our young ladies come to school wearing the most beautiful jewellery, but can you please remind your daughters and support us around the school rules for jewellery which are: Students may wear small plain stud earrings in their ears. Cultural taonga can be worn. Permission to wear any other jewellery of importance can be obtained by making a request in writing to the Deputy Principal. Nail Polish is not permitted.

I hope you all have a wonderful break and get the chance to have some quality time with your family. We look forward to seeing you back here for the start of Term 2 on the 28th April.

Tracey Hughes
Acting Principal

Congratulations to our past Students, Adi Ashok and Muhammad Abba who were both recently named in the BlackCaps ODI Squad.

We love to continue to see the success of our past students.
Social Media
Recently we have been informed of posts being made on social media and this is increasingly affecting the way our students interact with each other at school.
This can make it harder for them to form and keep positive friendships. Small disagreements can quickly grow online, with some students feeling overwhelmed by the influence of others who stir up drama.
As students can be constantly connected online, it's difficult for them to take a break and get space from these issues. This can lead to feelings of worry or stress and sometimes students might make poor choices because they feel pressure to protect their image in front of a large online audience.

As a parent, we hope that you are aware of how your child uses their devices and what social media platforms they are using. We strongly encourage you to review what social media your child is consuming. Here at MRI we have strong systems in place to ensure Social Media is not accessed while at school. It is not the school’s responsibility to resolve social media issues that occur outside of school hours.
If you would like advice or information about dealing with your child around social media, please feel free to contact DP Mr Maskell cmaskell@mri.school.nz
