Happy Samoan language Week!

We have had a busy start to the term.

Our school Book Fair took place this week. Our Student Librarians did a great job supporting our school librarian, Whaea Rachel, to organise this opportunity to see and purchase a wide range of books.

Today our school photographs have been taken and our students looked fabulous and well presented in their school uniforms! We will let you know once they are available for order.

School finishes at 12pm today so that all of our teaching staff and support staff who work with students can attend a learning conference with our local Kāhui Ako Schools. It is a valuable time for us to come together to support and share the work that we do to raise achievement and meet the needs of our students. Our goal is to ‘carve pathways of success for our akonga/students’. Thank you for your support with this.
We have a new, very special, Kāhui Ako project this year where students from across our local schools will be filming a beautiful waiata that we have been learning. The waiata is ‘He Kākano āhau’ by Hohepa Tamehana. The song is about the importance of language and culture. We are honoured to have been given the permission to record this waiata as a Kāhui Ako. It is very special. A letter was emailed on Tuesday with information regarding this. If you do not want your child to be filmed as part of this project, please contact the office immediately.

We have many exciting events coming up later this term, including our Matariki Celebrations and Art Week where we live, breathe and create art. Your child will have selected their art options that they are interested in and will be assigned one of those. We will hold an exhibition of all of the work completed for our school community on Wednesday 3 July. We would love to see you come along. Please see the attached flyer below.
Early next term are our School Open Days for students who wish to attend our school in 2025. Prospective families will be shown the many and varied opportunities that we have to offer at Mt Roskill Intermediate School. Enrolments for both in zone and out of zone students are now open. If you would like to attend or know of someone who may be interested, please see the attached information below for more detail on how to book in.
At the end of this term you will receive your child’s report. Students are working hard on their learning and progressing toward achieving their goals. While our teachers were moderating writing across classrooms and teams recently, we read through some amazing writing. As a school, we have been focusing on sentences, both simple and complex. This is an area that has been highlighted in the Year 10 co-requisites that many students need to work on. Our Literacy Extension group with Ms Pascoe and Mrs Fleming is up and running and supporting our students in extending their writing skills even further. This is a beautiful piece of writing from one of our Y8 students:

Laying down on the soft grass, Layla stared at the stars twinkling in the dark, wondering how it would be like to be a star. Not the burning hot gasses, rock and debris merged as clumps in the sky, but someone who everyone thought was special. Someone that little kids would dress up as on Halloween. Someone respected, or more importantly, loved. Letting her thoughts wander aimlessly, she drifted off into the world of subconscious imagination.
“Mum…” she trailed off, staring at the glowing, faceless figure in disbelief. It couldn’t be! Ten years ago her mother left, leaving only the few images of her as Layla’s source of remembrance. But only her mother had the perfectly curled ginger hair, the clothes that fit just right, those gentle hands that ran through Layla’s hair whilst she slept.
“Mum!” she shouted again, whilst her mother turned to leave. Layla began to run, her feet pounding in uneven steps while her mother strolled into the blinding white light. “Mum!”
Layla woke up, startled and more disturbed than she’d been in years.

Congratulations to our CZ Rugby teams and Football teams, who recently competed at their respective Central Zones. We had three rugby teams represent the school on the 16th of May: our boys’ open weight side, our girls’ open weight side and our boys’ U55 side. Our U55s won their competition, whilst our girls placed 2nd in a very tough competition. This was a very pleasing result from our rugby teams. Recently, our Football teams’ proudly represented MRI at CZ Football. The highlight of this was our Year Eight girls’ team placing second in their competition out of 15 teams. Well done to all our CZ Teams! We are proud of your commitment, passion, sportsmanship and hard work. A special thanks to our staff coaches, who have given up many lunchtimes to provide these opportunities.
