Welcome back to Term Four!
It is shaping up to be another action packed term.
Our Māori Graduation, a Campus event, takes place next week, hosted by Mt Roskill Grammar School. This is held early before the secondary students go on exam leave. This is a campus event where we honour our graduating Māori students, passing them into the care of the next stage in their schooling, or in the case of the year thirteen students, back to the community.
Next week our students heading to Japan, fly out. This is part of a long standing relationship and cultural exchange that we have with the City of Munakata. Our students will spend time in Tokyo and Fukuoka, experiencing Japanese schooling, culture and living. We wish them safe travels and look forward to seeing photos of their adventures.
Our Chess team is competing with the Chess Power National Competition over Labour weekend, we wish them all the very best.
Orientation days for Year Six students who are enrolled to come to Mount Roskill Intermediate School next year are happening in the next couple of weeks. This is a worthwhile transition event for incoming students to make connections, meet staff and students and become excited about next year. Students from Mt Roskill Primary Tuesday 4th November : 9am- 12:30pm
Students from all other schools Thursday 6th November: 9am- 12:30pm

End-of-Year Assessments and Reporting
As we approach the end of the school year, students will soon begin their end-of-year testing and assessments. These assessments are an important part of how we gather evidence of your child’s learning progress.
Over the next few weeks, students will be revisiting key learning areas in class. We encourage you to talk with your child about what they are working on and where they feel they may need extra practice or revision at home. Their progress will be shared with you in their end-of-term report.
This year, teachers are required to report against the new Phases of the Curriculum in Mathematics, which are replacing the previous Curriculum Levels. Please note that the revised English curriculum for this level (Phase Three) remains in draft form and is not yet in full use.
Although the curriculum is changing, the new national assessment tools are still in development and have not yet been released to schools. As a result, many schools—including Mt Roskill Intermediate—will continue to use the existing assessment tools and current reporting language. This is because current standardised assessments do not yet align with the new phases of the Mathematics Curriculum.
The Ministry of Education’s new reporting language has also undergone several revisions. To ensure clarity and consistency, Mt Roskill Intermediate will wait to implement the new reporting framework until the final assessment tools and the Phase Three English curriculum have been released. In the meantime, we will continue to use our current NCEA-based reporting language for the end-of-2025 reporting cycle. This will provide a clear and consistent picture of your child’s progress, using familiar terms that support comparison over time.
End-of-year reports will be sent home on Wednesday, 10 December.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.

As you will be aware from our communications over the holiday period, during our renovations, asbestos was found in the glue of the lino flooring in our Food Technology Block. The first stage of specialist removal was undertaken. The second stage of removal will take place during the upcoming summer holiday period. For the rest of the year there will be no access to that block, including our Ahuru Mōwai. Food Technology and Māori Enhancement have been temporarily relocated to other learning spaces for the remainder of the year. There is no health and safety risk to students or the school while we wait for the phase two removal. We are working with specialist contractors and the Ministry of Education and the silver lining is that we will have a refurbished Food Technology room, laundry and bathroom at the end of the process.
Last term our school community certainly had its fair share of illness. Please remember that we do need to account for each day that your child is away, and it’s important that the office is informed. The easiest way to do this is through email attendance@mri.school.nz or calling the school office. As we did last term, we will be sending out attendance letters to each family detailing percentages of days missed and how many days students have been late.
We extend our sincere congratulations to Paris and Dylan for their outstanding sporting achievements during the recent school holidays. Dylan represented the Auckland U14 Blue basketball team, where they placed 2nd at the BBNZ regional tournament. Meanwhile, Paris was captain of the U13 Aotearoa NZ Māori Girls Rugby League team, who won the recent Pasifika Youth Cup Festival. We are immensely proud of them both.

We would like to acknowledge Mr Parikh and his company, Rhythm House Events and Films, who photographed and filmed our production of Aladdin Jr, last term. Mr Parikh has made his beautiful photographs and recordings available to us to share. We are incredibly grateful for this generous gift. Mr Parikh is a parent of the school and a past student himself.
We have a fantastic school that I am very proud to be a part of. Congratulations to our returning and newly elected School Board. I look forward to working with them to ensure that Mount Roskill Intermediate continues to be an inclusive, kind, high achieving school. We are proud of the great school and the amazing students that we have. Thank you for supporting us by sending your child to MRI, and working with us.

Mt Roskill Intermediate School is no longer taking payments directly to our school bank account. Please see the document below to help you to sign up to Kindo, whether it is on your computer or using the app on your phone.
