Message from the Principal

We have had a wonderful Term 2 with lots of great events and achievements. One of my highlights was the showcasing of the football shirt designed by MRI students to represent New Zealand and Oceania at the FIFA World cup. There has been a wonderful range of other achievements by students, including zone days, maths competitions, chess achievements, after school academies and tournaments, participation in the elite division of Sports Camp, Production rehearsals, Tongirario Crossing, Cultural events, TOI Wearable art and the creation of great projects through enhancements and electives programmes. Our Kapa Haka roopu performed beautifully for their whānau at our recent Matariki celebration.
This week you will have received a notification via our Hero app that details which attendance bracket your child has fallen into for Term 2. There are four brackets, the bracket ‘Regular’ attendance is what we are aiming for and is above 90% for the term. You can use Hero to check your child’s attendance at any time. You can also use it to log an absence.
Next term will be another busy, exciting time!
School reports, including the new reporting requirements, will be sent home and made available online via Hero on Friday 24th July. The slightly later time frame is to allow us to have the calibrated results of the Ministry of Education SMART tests that students sat earlier this term. These results are due at the end of this term. This week, you would have received information about the Talanoa Ako Learning Conversations taking place on the 29th and 30th July, Week 2 of term 3. This is an opportunity to talk through any questions you have about your child’s Report and their progress against the new curriculum expectations. Please ensure you book in a time to meet with your child’s teacher on one of these days. We want to work with you to ensure that your child makes the most progress possible with their learning.
We are holding a ‘Report Explanation’ parent meeting on Thursday 23 July at 9.30am for those who would like to attend. Please see the attached information below.
Early next term are our School Open Days on the 5th-6th August. These show prospective families the many and varied opportunities that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School and showcase different curriculum and extra-curricular areas. Enrolments for both in zone and out of zone students are open. If you would like to attend or know of someone who may be interested, please see the attached information below for more detail.
At the end of Term One we held our school Art Exhibition. From this, there were a number of art pieces selected to be part of the Mt Roskill Student Art Showcase. This will be held at Lynfield Health and Leisure Centre from the 23 to 26 July.

You will have noticed that we have a number of building renovations taking place. This is linked to our school property plan and roofing/weather tightness projects. We are excited to finally have these being carried out. Our Tennyson Centre and Library roofing areas have now been completed and our hall redesign of the south facing roof has now commenced. This latest project restricts our hall use, with special dispensation being worked around for our school production at the end of next term. Staff parking is greatly reduced due to the scaffolding, particularly with the ongoing construction of the bridge still in progress. We kindly remind families that access via the shared driveway is only outside of peak school times. Please pick up and drop your children off outside of the school grounds using the surrounding streets.
The Denbigh Ave bridge replacement is well underway and it is currently on track for completion at the beginning of September. We can’t wait!
Congratulations to all of our students for their work this term. We have seen wonderful learning progress. We are proud of all our students' many and varied achievements this term from their hard work both in and out of the classroom. Well done!

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori, Happy Matariki!
Twinkling in the winter sky just before dawn, Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Māori New Year. For Māori, the appearance of Matariki heralds a time of remembrance, joy and peace.
Have a safe holiday. Term 3 will commence on Monday 20th July.

Ka mahuta a Matariki i te pae, ka mahuta ō tātou tūmanako ki te tau

When Matariki rises above the horizon, our aspirations rise to the year ahead.
