Message from the Principal
Manuia le vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa!
Happy Samoan Language Week

As the winter season takes hold, this time of year signifies the beginning of Matariki, the Māori New Year and the celebration of culture, language and people.
This week we held our shared campus Matariki Celebration where our Kapa Haka group performed beautifully. We are very proud of them all.
This time of year is also very important for our students and their families who have been observing Eid-uli-Adha. Eid Mubarak!

We are very fortunate to have been given the opportunity for our school to travel by bus to the Aotea Centre to see the NYT (National Youth Theatre) production of ‘Seussical’ on the last Friday of this term. You will have received an email with an online form to give permission for your child to attend. There is no cost for this. A number of our students will be performing in the show.

As part of our Matariki celebrations, students are asked to wear ‘sparkly’ star inspired clothing on Thursday 26th June. There will be a number of lunchtime activities running. A matariki tree is in our foyer where stars of remembrance can be added.

With mid-year fast approaching, teachers have been writing reports. These communicate your child's progress in their learning.
This year, Intermediate School Teachers are required to report to parents against the new ‘phases of the curriculum’ that are replacing ‘curriculum levels’ for Mathematics. The revised English curriculum for the Intermediate Level is still only in draft form. Schools are required to continue to use the same assessment tools this year to support professional judgements as the new assessment is currently still under development. The current standardised assessments do not align to the new phases of the mathematics curriculum. For this Report, we will continue to use our current assessment language, changing over to the new Ministry of Education assessment language for the end of year Report. An information flyer will be inserted into your child's Report which will go home on Friday 27th June.

In week one of next term, Learning Conversations (Talanoa Ako) meetings will take place to support your child's learning and next learning goals. Information for booking will take place shortly. We will also hold further parent curriculum meetings on these days.
Students are working hard on their learning and progressing toward achieving their goals. While our teachers were moderating writing across classrooms and teams recently, we read through some great writing. As a school, we have been focusing on sentences, both simple and complex. This is an area that has been highlighted in the Year 10 co-requisites that many students need to work on. Our English Extension group with Ms Pascoe and Mrs Fleming is up and running and supporting our students in extending their writing skills even further.

It is wonderful to see students happy and growing in their learning and confidence as they develop new skills and get involved in the many opportunities at Intermediate.
Coming up next week is our Art Week. Your child has opted into an art activity, ranging from wearable art and paint pouring to perspective drawing. We can’t wait to see what amazing works of art are created! All students are asked to wear old clothes next week for their art activities, not school uniforms.
This is a great opportunity to celebrate the Arts fostering creativity, which is an important part of a child’s education.
An Art exhibition of the work will be held on Wednesday 25th June. We would love for you to join us for this great event. All students will have their work exhibited.
Early next term are our School Open Days for students who wish to attend our school in 2026. Prospective families will be shown the many and varied opportunities that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. Enrolments for both in zone and out of zone students are now open. If you would like to attend or know of someone who may be interested, please see the attached information for more detail.
This week you will have received an email detailing your child’s percentage of attendance for the term so far. The ideal attendance goal for each individual student is over 90% for each term, with winter closing in this can be hard to achieve for some. We ask that every family is doing their best to get their child to school when they are healthy enough to do so. A reminder that school starts at 8.50am. From next term, if a student signs in late, their caregivers will receive an email that details the time signed in and the reason given for the lateness. We hope this information will be helpful.

Our school Book Fair took place recently. Our Student Librarians did a fabulous job supporting our school librarian, Whaea Rachel, to organise this opportunity to see and purchase a wide range of books. There were some amazing book fair competition entries, the art work of which we will exhibit as part of our Art Exhibition.
Our school photographs, ordered from last term, will come home with your child this week.

Thank you for the recent support with the Teacher Only Day. This was an approved Curriculum Learning day for teachers, looking at Structured Literacy as part of the new English Curriculum changes. There is a further Curriculum Teacher Only day coming up on 1 August when the school will be closed for all students other than those in the Production who will have a ‘Boot Camp’ day in preparation for the upcoming show.
Congratulations to all the MRI Central Zone teams, who recently competed at their respective sports. We have been competitive and strong in a number of Central Zones across term 2. The highlight of these including our year 7 girls winning Central Zone Year 7 Girls futsal. Then backing this up by placing second in Auckland for Football, which considering the number of schools and students who participated in this tournament is an incredible result. Well done to all our CZ Teams!
We are proud of your commitment, passion, sportsmanship and hard work.
Alongside Central Zones, after-School Sports are well underway in Netball, Basketball and Waterpolo. Special mention needs to go to our Basketball A team who are currently leading the RYZ Basketball League in their Tuesday night competition. A special thanks to our teachers and parent-coaches, who have given up many lunchtimes, early mornings and afternoons to provide these opportunities.
ACFC (Auckland City Football) were farewelled to the FIFA Club World Cup by Mt Roskill Intermediate School through the gifting of taonga to take with them. We wish them all the best in the tournament. Below are the details of how you can watch their matches. DAZN is offering free access to all FIFA Club World Cup™ matches. Here’s how you can tune in:
