Message from the Principal
Ngā mihi o te tau hau,
Welcome to all of our new families and those who have children returning to our wonderful school. It has been a great start to the school year and fantastic to see so many parents here at the school on the first day.
We hope you and your child found the Pōwhiri welcoming. Thank you for choosing to send your child to Mount Roskill Intermediate School, we really look forward to working with you!

Our teachers have been looking forward to meeting you all and we are excited about the year ahead.
We want all our students to be happy here at MRI, feel safe, know that they are valued, and experience great learning. We will be working hard together for this to happen.

As per the Government requirements on schools, our students continue to have Reading, Writing and Mathematics learning time daily. This will take place as specific learning blocks and will also be explicitly integrated into other curriculum areas such as Inquiry and Specialisation areas e.g Food Technology. Along with our great teaching and learning programmes, intermediate school offers many opportunities for students to try new things. There are many sporting and cultural activities as well as areas to help out in such as the library and leadership roles. All of these add to your child’s education, building skills and confidence. It is a busy time of year when students have a lot of information coming at them about signing up for activities. This is a great way to begin to prepare students for secondary school where they have multiple options open to them. Students and families are able to keep an eye on the student notices via our website or school app. Weekly Student Notices 2025

Please let us know if there is any specific information about your child that we need to know. We can make a big difference to your child's learning when we work together to support them.

Meet the Teacher/Staff: We would love to meet you on Thursday 13th February 5.30- 6.30pm
This will be an opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher and wider school staff and members of the School Board, along with other families. It is an informal meeting time where you will also be able to have a short presentation in the classroom that will answer any of your questions and opportunity to hear key messages from our Senior Leadership team.

We are fortunate to have appointed additional high quality staff. We welcome:
Mrs Natasha Nethula - Specialist ESOL Teacher
Whaea Jody Stewart - Specialist Performing Arts
Mrs Lucy Hannah - Year 7 Teacher
Miss Ruby Wright - Year 7 Teacher
Mr Keegan Fernandes - Year 7 Teacher
Ms Katie Sharp - Year 8 Teacher
Mrs Fran Mes - Year 8 Teacher
Mrs Payal Lata - Year 7 Teacher

We have a wonderful team of staff here at Mount Roskill Intermediate. We all love this school and community and are excited to work with you.

School swimming starts next week. Your child's teachers will let them know the day of the week when they need to bring their swimming togs.

Attendance makes a huge difference to achievement. If your child misses one day of school a week, this means that they have missed 40 school days over the year. This adds up to 8 weeks of school! Clearly this puts their learning at risk. If your child is sick, it is very important that you contact the school via the SchoolsApp or email attendance@mri.school.nz or phone the school office (09 620 8508) to let us know.

Cell Phones: You will be aware of government requirements relating to no cell phones in schools.
If your child needs to have a cellphone while travelling to and from school, they are required to hand it in via their classroom teacher for the duration of the day. These will then be kept at the School Office. No cell phones are allowed to remain with a child during the school day. They must be handed in. If a child does not hand a phone in, it will be sent to the School Office and an adult will need to collect it.
If you need to get important information to your child, please contact the school office who will ensure that your child receives the information that they need.

If you are visiting the school, can you please make sure that you sign in at the administration area first, and do not go directly to classrooms or into the playground. This is part of our school Health and Safety management. Thank you for your support with this.

We look forward to working with you this year.

Message from the Board Chairperson
Nau mai, haere mai, te whānau - a warm welcome to everyone for 2025.
It was wonderful to welcome new and returning parents, teachers and students, at our pōwhiri yesterday. The Board is honoured to have you all in our wonderful school community.
2025 is shaping up to be a big year for our school, with our students at the heart of everything, showcasing their wonderful talents. Intermediate years are a special time in the educational journey and I hope students enjoy all the many opportunities available to you, meet new friends and create lots of memories. Good luck to all the Houses: Rātā, Rimu and Kauri, and I look forward to seeing you all throughout the year.

Board Elections are also coming up in September for those who may wish to apply to be on the Board, or to vote for existing Board members who are standing again for another term (more details to come). We would welcome more Board members to support our fantastic school - it’s a few hours of your time every month, with no special skills required, and a very rewarding way of giving back to the school. Please contact the office at (09) 620 8508 if you have any questions.
On behalf of the Board, have a great year, everyone!
