Message from the Principal
Our students have continued to show great focus and effort in their learning and have recently been completing their end-of-year assessments. It is encouraging to see the strong progress and positive results across our classes. An external facilitator, who has supported the marking of some of our students’ writing throughout the year, commented on how impressed she was with the significant progress she has observed in the classes she has been monitoring.
As a school, we are working carefully through the changes brought by the new curriculum. The Ministry of Education’s new assessment tool, which is designed to align with these curriculum updates, is not yet available for schools. Therefore, we have chosen to continue using the NCEA-based reporting categories that have been in place for the remainder of this year.

Our group of students and staff who travelled to Japan for our Munakata exchange had an incredible time. They were received with amazing hospitality. The group had the opportunity to visit cultural and historic sites, visited Disneyland, shrines and experienced Japanese education and home life. Special lifelong memories and friendships have been made.

This week we welcomed Year 6 students who are enrolled to come to Mount Roskill Intermediate School next year with Orientation Days. Our current Year Seven students did an amazing job acting as mentors for these students.

Last week we held our school athletics day. It was great to have the weather be kind to us and see everyone engaged, showing amazing House pride and students supporting each other in the events. The central zone athletics day will take place on the 19th November.

I am proud to share some of the wider achievements our students have been having over the past few weeks.
Recently we had team representation at the Chess Power Nationals competition. To qualify for this event is a real credit. Although we did not place on the podium, we performed consistently, narrowly missing out on a podium spot. Congratulations to Benji, Rooney, Jasmine, Taiga and Jaggan on their achievements. Siblings, Jasmine and Rooney went on to compete in the individual champion trophy. This amazing family performed strongly, with Rooney placed fifth overall in the National Competition and Jasmine was the fifth placed Girl overall. Well done!

CZ Badminton was held recently at Auckland Badminton Arena. With badminton being a very popular after-school sport at MRI, it wasn’t a surprise that we were able to field a very competitive team. While all our MRI students were competitive in their grades, special mention goes to Emily, who placed 3rd in the year 8 girls' singles, and Aarush who placed 2nd in the year 8 boys. This was a fantastic result.
CZ Girls’ Touch took place recently, with our girls setting out to retain the champion title that we have held for the last three years in a row. They most certainly delivered, playing hard and fair and retaining the champions title.
Our Boys’ and Mixed Touch teams also competed recently in their respective Central Zones. Due to a change in rules, MRI wasn’t in a position to defend their Mixed title from last year, and the team was used as a development team for next year. This was reflected in their results, but far more encouragingly was the growth in the team during the day. Meanwhile the boys team, with a heavy Year 7 contingent, grew throughout the day and won their last two games to come fifth out of 13 teams. This was an admirable result. A big thank you to the families that came to support us.

I would like to acknowledge our very own year Paris who was named MVP of the Te Whenua Ariki 2025 Māori tournament held in Brisbane, Australia recently. She had successfully captained the U13 girls Tāmaki Makaurau Māori Rugby League team, the only NZ team to cross the ditch, to an undefeated tournament. This is an incredible achievement.

This year we are holding a special Sports Award Dinner to acknowledge and celebrate our highest performing athletes. This is the first year we have done this. Recipients have now been advised. This allows us to recognise more of our top athletes. Our highest Sports Awards will be re-presented at the wider school Awards Celebration Assembly.

We look forward to having whānau join us for our upcoming Awards Celebration Assembly - Monday 8th December, 1pm. If your child is receiving a certificate or award at the Award celebration, you will be notified directly within the next week or so.

Families are welcome to attend our Year 8 Graduation Ceremony - Wednesday 10th December, 1pm - 3pm in our School Gym. An After Ceremony Afternoon Tea will take place from 3.30pm - 4.30pm and will include Finger Food, Photo Booth, Celebration.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the many past students who were acknowledged in the Mt Roskill Grammar School Senior Prizegiving held recently. We are proud to follow your continued development as learners, leaders, artists, musicians, athletes and citizens.

Message from the Waterpolo Team Manager This year's waterpolo team had a great season, proving themselves a strong enough team to be promoted to B grade early in the season and holding their own in that grade. Every team member developed their skills across the season, especially those new to water polo. They were lucky to benefit from a few coaching sessions with Atlantis water polo club, which introduced them to more complex skills. They all brought energy and enthusiasm to each game and have learnt to match the physicality of higher grade waterpolo. They battled hard for wins over bigger schools.
MRIS is proud of you all, for your effort, your great attitude winning or losing, and your teamwork and commitment.

Kindo will now be used for sports, school trips and school purchases, as well as accessing our school lunch ordering system with Ezlunch. Kindo offers several payment methods, including free ones.
Mt Roskill Intermediate School is no longer taking payments directly to our school bank account. Please see the document below to help you to sign up to Kindo, whether it is on your computer or using the app on your phone.
