Message from the Principal
Last week all of our Classroom teachers were involved in a Teacher Only Day as part of our school wide training of Structured Literacy. It is important as teachers that we continue to be learners. We are 100% invested in ongoing learning at MRI, ensuring that all of our students have the very best education. Thank you for your support.
During this day our wonderful Production cast had a ‘Boot Camp’, continuing to rehearse for our upcoming ‘Aladdin Jr’. Final technicalities are coming together. It is an exciting time for sure! Tickets go on sale on Monday 11th August.
Last Thursday, after the wild weather, the sun came out long enough for us to run our school cross-country event. With house points and class points on offer for a top 20 finish, the stakes were high for everyone. Well done to all those who ran and especially those who placed. The top 8 from each race will head off to the upcoming Central Zone competition to represent MRI on Wednesday next week.
As we move through the school year, it's a great time to refocus on the goals set during our Talanoa Ako learning conversations. These goals were created to help guide students in their learning journey, but it’s easy for them to slip from memory as the term gets busy. Revisiting these goals at home can make a big difference—parents and whānau can support by simply asking about them and encouraging progress. By keeping these goals front of mind, we can help our students stay motivated, reflect on their learning and celebrate their achievements along the way.
This term we are fortunate to have a selection of our boys taking part in the pilot program of Tama Toa. This program is a holistic coaching program run by the One NZ Warriors community foundation. The boys take part in five sessions at school, before a final festival day. Last week's focus was on leadership and what that looks like to them, followed by a skills session focused on using space.
Last week also saw the girls’ Tupu Maia rugby league coaching programme kick off with the One NZ Warriors. The girls had a fantastic session, engaging full, with great learning. They were lucky enough to be coached by a few members of the Warriors Women’s team that plays in the NRLW.
Last week our chess team, under the great stewardship of Deputy Principal Mr McBride, headed off to a Chess Power Regional qualifying tournament. After a grueling day of intense chess, MRI emerged victorious in their last game to secure third place and a spot at the Chess Power Nationals later in the year. Well done to everyone in the team, and a special mention of Jasmine, who was recognised as the top girl player at the tournament.
Also last week our Girls netball team represented us in the Central Zone Girls Netball tournament, held at the Auckland Netball Centre. The girls displayed excellent sportsmanship and effort throughout the day. A big thank you to Mrs McCallum and the coaches, Quincy and Syndi-Lee, for their efforts on the day. The Year 8s had a tough day, with a few wins amidst some very narrow losses. The Year 7s continued their run of dominance, cruising their way to the finals, where they unfortunately went down by two goals. An incredible result, coming second out of 16 teams, and also qualifying them for the upcoming Auckland Interzone Champs. Well done, girls.
On Tuesday 29th July it was announced by Auckland Council that they are investing $2.65 million in the Roskill Schools Community Trust towards a new all-weather football turf on Mt Roskill Intermediates school grounds. Our goal is to reach $4.6million. This will allow the campus schools and the wider Roskill community access to a world-class football turf and facilities for our students to play football, improve their skills and invest in their sporting futures. We would like to thank Auckland City Football Club for their support and community focused vision.

As well as last week's great successes, this week has again been a busy week!
This week, our students who will be heading off to Sports Camp at Matamata later in the term, fundraised with a ‘Mega Bake sale’. Our students, families and staff baked up an absolutely amazing selection of tasty treats to sell. We are incredibly thankful to all of our families, staff and students that contributed and took part. We raised over $1550. What a fantastic effort!
Three of our amazing teams took part in the Combined Auckland Areas' Maths Challenge, run by the South Auckland Maths Challenge team. Our Year 7s came away with an impressive 2nd place, and our Year 8A team placed 3rd—a huge achievement! We’re so proud of all the students who took part. Their hard work, teamwork, and perseverance truly shone through. A big thank you to Mr. Coffey for his coaching of the teams.
Central Zone Rugby League was held this week at Margaret Griffin Park, with our Open Weight Boys and Girls teams competing. Our Under 55kg boys team automatically qualified for the Auckland Champs later in the term, as they had no competition. Our Open Weight Boys had a stellar day, showing grit and determination to go undefeated on their way to the finals. In a tough final against a very strong opponent, the boys played with a lot of heart but ultimately came in second place. The girls also qualified for the finals, steadily improving throughout the day. Their final was an intense match, with MRI firmly in control. Our captain, Paris, showed exceptional skill, further cementing her as one of the brightest prospects in Auckland Rugby League. A big thank you to Mr. Uili and Cole Hughes for their hard work and effort with all our league teams. This fantastic result is a direct reflection of the dedication you have put into the program.
School Board elections are coming up! We have always had a strong Board with a heart for our students to ‘thrive’. Candidate nominations have now closed. We are holding a Meet the Candidate meeting on Monday 11August 5.30-6.30pm. This is an opportunity for you to meet those that are standing for the School Board, before voting opens.
We recently held our School Open Days which showcased the many and varied opportunities for prospective families that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. We appreciate the involvement of our wonderful students that took on the role of tour guides, highlighting different curriculum and extra-curricular areas and representing our school well. We are looking forward to welcoming current year 6 students to MRI next year.
Enrolments are currently being accepted for both in-zone and out of zone. Out of Zone enrolment cut off date is 3pm, Wednesday 27th August 2025.
Yesterday we sent home a letter advising of the upcoming Union Meetings. On Wednesday 20th August teachers and support staff from this school will be attending a NZEI Te Riu Roa paid union meeting. Our teaching staff and support staff who are members of NZEI are legally entitled to attend this meeting. Due to the large number of staff attending, the school cannot safely operate as normal. The school remains open, but is closed for instruction.
We encourage parents to make arrangements to pick their child(ren) up from school by 12.30pm on Wednesday 20th August. We have a few non-Union members who will be able to supervise any student who must remain at school until 3:00 p.m. If you agree to your child being allowed to leave the school for home at 12:30pm, please complete the permission slip that was sent home and return it as soon as possible to your child's teacher. Alternatively you can email your child's teacher directly.

Finally, we are very proud of our Deputy Principal Mr Jesse McBride who was recently invited to present to a School Attendance Leaders forum around our school approach to attendance.
