Message from the Principal
There are a lot of great things happening this term!
Today was Pink Shirt day, a day to show our commitment to creating a kinder, more inclusive Aotearoa, where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. We have had a focus across the school this week to carry out anonymous kindness to others through our words and actions.
This week our Book Fair took place. This year's theme was the Eerie and Scary Book Fair. Our Student Librarians did a fabulous job supporting our School Librarian, Whaea Rachel, to organise this opportunity to see and purchase a wide range of books. Thank you to those who attended and supported this book fair. Money raised and books donated helps us to keep our library well resourced for our students.
Teacher Only Day - Friday 29 May, School Closed
Coming up on Friday 29th May, we have a Teacher Only Day. This is an approved Curriculum Learning day for teachers around the new mathematics curriculum. This is the last in the series of maths days for our teachers. The school will be closed for all students on this day. Thank you for your support with this.

Students are working hard on their learning and making progress. As a school, in English, students are working on narrative writing (stories) with language features and sentence structures that reflect the new curriculum. Next week on Thursday 21 May, we are offering an opportunity for parents to come to a morning workshop to look at what your child is doing in English this term. We will be sending out further information about this workshop on Monday.
Over the last few weeks all mainstream classroom students have sat the new Ministry of Education SMART tests for reading and mathematics. Some students were randomly selected to also trial the new writing assessment. As this is the first time that this assessment tool has been used nationwide, the normed results will not be available to schools until week 11 of this term. We are interested to see how this test matches both the new curriculum and other testing that has been done with students already. We will be able to provide parents with information next term around this.

Over the next few weeks we will be introducing a new writing acceleration tool across the school called ‘Scribo’. This provides support for students to see corrections that they can make to their writing and prompt them to produce work to a higher quality needed for the new curriculum. We are excited to see the positive impact that this will have on student writing.

We are about to start our second cohort (group) Maths acceleration programme (MAP) which is predominantly year 7 students. This programme is to help students reach the new maths curriculum level for their year group.

Last term our students achieved the best attendance that MRI has achieved in many years. Well done to all those students and families! Next week you will receive a notification through Hero, detailing your child’s attendance for the term so far. The ideal attendance goal for each individual student is over 90% for each term, with winter closing in this can be hard to achieve for some. We ask that every family is doing their best to get their child to school when they are healthy enough to do so. A reminder that school starts at 8.50am and students should be in class by this time.

Early next term are our School Open Days for students who wish to attend our school in 2027. Prospective families will be shown the many and varied opportunities that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. Enrolments for both in zone and out of zone students are now open. If you would like to attend or know of someone who may be interested, please see the attached information below for more detail.

On Wednesday our Tennyson Centre students were involved in the Mt Roskill Campus Challenge. This was an adapted sports day for our students across the campus. They got to participate in a number of adapted sporting activities. There was lots of fun and laughter, it was great to see the students having a go at many new things. All students were awarded a medal at the end of the event.

We currently have a wide range of property works in progress. It is exciting to have reconstruction of the Denbigh Ave bridge finally taking place. Pedestrian access remains available with work projected to be completed by the end of August, all going to plan.
The Tennyson Centre therapy area and the library area roofing replacement is also underway. The library will be moving to a remote ordering and delivery of books, though our library site here. Work is expected to be completed by the end of week eight this term.

Congratulations to our ‘number 1’ chess team who placed 4th overall in the recent Auckland Intermediate Chess power competitions, and qualified for the National Chess competition.

Congratulations to all the MRI Central Zone(CZ) teams, who recently competed at their respective sports. We have been competitive and strong in a number of Central Zones competitions across term 2. The highlight of these including our Year 8 girls winning Central Zone Year 8 Girls futsal. Well done to all our CZ Teams! We are proud of your commitment, passion, sportsmanship and hard work.
Alongside Central Zones, after-School Sports are well underway in Netball, Basketball and Waterpolo.
A special thanks to our teachers and parent-coaches, who have given up many lunchtimes, early mornings and afternoons to provide these opportunities.

This week was Support Staff appreciation week. We appreciate all our wonderful support staff and everything they do at MRI. From caring for our grounds, working in classrooms, administration, cleaning, coaching, managing libraries and helping and supporting our students in so many ways, we couldn’t be without them!
