Namaste!

Students will soon be involved in their end of year testing and assessments. This will help provide important information to support the evidence of your child’s progress within the curriculum this year. Students will be revising their learning in class over the next few weeks. Please talk to your child about what they are working on with their learning and what they feel they need to practise and revise at home. Your child’s progress will be reported to you at the end of the term. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.

Last week our local MP held an inaugural Mt Roskill Schools Art Showcase. Congratulations to the students who had work selected to be exhibited. Our display highlighted a range of our students' talents.
This week students from our contributing schools attended our Orientation Days to support a positive transition to MRI next year. It was great to see many familiar faces from current or past families, along with new students. A number of our current Year Seven students did an amazing job acting as mentors for these students. We look forward to welcoming them next year.
One of our special campus events of the year is our Māori Graduation. This took place on Thursday evening hosted at Mt Roskill Primary School. It takes place before the MRGS year 13 students go on study leave. This is a really special annual event where we celebrate and honour the journey, the mahi and achievement of all our Māori students and kapa haka roopu across the campus in completing a new or final stage in their schooling. Ehara taku toa, he toa takitini. My success should not be bestowed onto me alone, as it was not individual success but success of a collective. Special congratulations to the recipients of our special school awards, acknowledging leadership and contribution to Māori and Kapa Haka at MRI. These will also be represented at our wider school Awards Assembly later in the term. We are proud of all of our students!
Next week 20 students fly out to Japan with DP Mrs Hughes, Mrs Collings and Matua Ormsby as part of our exchange with Munakata City. This is the first time since ‘COVID-19’ that this trip has been able to take place. They will visit a number of places including experiencing Japanese schooling. We wish them safe travels and are excited to follow their adventures!

As you will be aware, our very special Chess coach Mr Wayne McDougall passed away suddenly after a very short aggressive illness. We are incredibly thankful for the many years of chess coaching and the support of our students and school that he gave. Mr McDougall will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
A number of our chess team had qualified for the upcoming Chess Power Nationals competition. Deputy Principal Mr McBride has stepped in to lead the Chess Club and has helped organise for a few of our students to still participate in this competition over Labour weekend. We wish them all the best.
Congratulations to our waterpolo team who have now finished their season. The team had a highly successful season under the leadership of Mrs Levy, with the team winning the C division. A massive thank you to her, the players and their families for making it such a success. Well done to all those involved, we are very proud of you!

Next week we are celebrating Diwali with a wide range of exciting lunchtime activities running across the week. Next Friday all students are encouraged to wear their own cultural dress to school. This also ties in with our school inquiry focus, "Express Yourself" for this term. We look forward to sharing photos of this next week!

We're looking forward to a busy, action-packed term. Keep an eye on our newsletters and messaging to keep informed on what is happening and when.

We have a fantastic school that I am very proud to be a part of. Our Board is committed to ensuring that Mount Roskill Intermediate is a safe, high achieving school.
Everyday it brings a smile to my face to see and listen to the amazing, talented students that we have. Thank you for supporting us by sending your child to MRI and working with us.

Happy Diwali!

A reminder that as a community we need to demonstrate our school values of Care, Respect and Responsibility when picking up and dropping off our students to school. We have had some near misses recently between cars and students. The risk is greatly reduced if we are all obeying the road rules and stopping in safe places. Also, a reminder that parking on the grass, or the side of the road is not an option when coming down our driveway. This is all said with the safety of our children in mind. Thank you.
