Message from the Principal
As the winter season takes hold, this time of year signifies the beginning of Matariki, the Māori New Year and the celebration of culture, language and people. It is a time to look forward to the promise of a new year and to make plans for the future.
This year Matariki public holiday falls on Friday, July 10. The rising period of the star cluster is officially recognised from July 6 to July 13, 2026. As this falls into the school holiday period, over the last couple of weeks of Term 2, we will hold a number of activities as part of celebrating this significant time of year.
Our Kapa Haka roopu will lay a hangi and perform for their whānau next week. There will be a number of lunchtime activities and competitions running. A Matariki tree is in our foyer where stars of remembrance can be added. Students are asked to wear ‘sparkly’ star inspired clothing on the last day of term, Friday 3rd July.
Last Friday our school had the privilege of participating in the TOI Wearable Arts competition for schools in New Zealand. This is a vibrant showcase of young talent, bringing design ideas to life and showcasing them in the Aotea Centre! We are excited that two MRI designs, selected based on design submissions, were accepted into this amazing showcase of Auckland/ New Zealand young talent. This year they received over 900 registrations nationwide!
Our MRI students had developed their designs as part of one of our electives of ‘fashion design'. They then had three weeks to bring their ideas to life. This included pattern making, sewing, hand sewing, crocheting, structural creating as part of the process.
We are so proud of the group of designers, the models and our wonderful visual art teacher Ms Goforth. It was an exciting opportunity, experience and event. Congratulations to all of those involved. Our MRI team represented us strongly and paved the way to inspire our future designers.
Last week Round #3 of the UOA (University of Auckland) Maths challenge took place today with Auckland Intermediate Schools.
Our students did a fabulous job, going from strength to strength to finish incredibly strongly:
Year 7: Team 1 = 2nd, Team 2 = 3rd, Year 8: Team 1 = 2nd, Team 2 = 1st
Congratulations to the students involved! Special thanks to Mr Coffey for his coaching and UOA for this great initiative.

With mid-year fast approaching, teachers have been writing reports on our new student management system, to reflect the updated New Zealand Curriculum and new reporting requirements. This will communicate your child's progress in their learning against the new ‘phases of the curriculum’.
Due to the changes, including new assessment tools, the new version of Reports will be sent home at the end of week one next term. This will be just prior to our Learning Conversations (Talanoa Ako) meetings in week two of next term. Information for booking will take place before the end of this term.
We will also hold further parent curriculum workshops on these days.

We have had a wide range of sporting successes over the last few weeks. Congratulations to all the MRI Central Zone teams, who recently competed at their respective sports. We have been competitive and strong in a number of Central Zones across term 2. The highlight of these including our year 8 Girls Football placing 2nd after a final penalty shootout and Y8 Boys Finishing second in their pool, going down 1-0 to the eventual champions, losing by penalties to place 4th in Central Auckland
Central Zones Rugby U60s third overall, Our Open Girls going on to place first equal in points, but second overall on countback and qualifying for Auckland Champs in week 10. Open Boys second overall. Well done to all our CZ Teams! We are proud of your commitment, passion, sportsmanship and hard work.
Alongside Central Zones, after-School Sports are well underway in Netball, Basketball, Waterpolo and breakdancing. A special thanks to our teachers and parent-coaches, who have given up many lunchtimes, early mornings and afternoons to provide these opportunities.

Yesterday a number of students, staff and parent helpers headed down to Matamata for our annual Sports Camp. We wish them all the best for this competitive, exciting and exhausting week ahead!

Early next term are our School Open Days for students who wish to attend our school in 2027. Prospective families will be shown the many and varied opportunities that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. Enrolments for both in zone and out of zone students are now open. If you would like to attend or know of someone who may be interested, please see the attached information for more detail.
Finally, I am excited to finally be able to share with you an exciting initiative that MRI has been involved in, representing New Zealand on the world stage!
Earlier this year our school students were selected to design a World Cup jersey, representing Oceania and New Zealand for the Design FC project ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The initiative gave students from each of the countries participating in the World Cup, the opportunity to create a football-inspired design representing their country.
With support from Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), Mt Roskill Intermediate Students were selected to bring New Zealand’s story to life!
Our Team was led by footballer and artist Zeno Bridges who pulled together the design of the wider team made up of Abbie Miller, Aasia Sediqi, Ty Von Heiderbrandt and Viaan Reddy. They are also keen footballers.
The shirt has now been printed, launched and is currently on display in New York as part of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
We are so very honoured for the opportunity and proud of our students and their fabulous, rich story telling to represent our school, Mt Roskill, New Zealand and Oceania on the world stage!
