Message from the Principal
Welcome back to Term Three!

We kicked off the term with Talanoa Ako, Learning Conversations this week after Progress Reports were sent home at the end of last term. This was an important time to discuss the progress your child has made and reset their learning goals. Thank you to everyone who came along. We want to continue to work with you to ensure that your child makes the most progress possible with their learning. We welcome your questions and appreciate your input and any additional information that might be important for us to know. We are stronger together!

At this time of year, we undertake a thorough analysis of our school-wide achievement and progress data. This process enables us to refine our teaching approaches and ensure that every student is supported to make the best possible progress in their learning.

We are encouraged by the progress that is evident across the core learning areas. As a school, it is important that we continuously reflect on our learning programmes and remain responsive to the needs of our students. In line with this, we have introduced a number of additional support and extension initiatives this year, aligned with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum and tailored to meet the needs of our current learners.

Please find a link to a document which summarises any changes to the refreshed NZ Curriculum that have occurred since our Parent Workshop that took place in March 2025. We will continue to keep you updated on any further changes throughout the year.
We recognise that, in addition to students participating in targeted learning programmes, it is equally important for your child to understand the specific goals they are working towards. These were discussed during the recent Learning Conversations. If you were unable to meet with your child’s teacher, we encourage you to contact them to arrange a suitable time for a meeting with both you and your child.

Friday 1st August will be a Teacher Only Day, school will be closed. This day will allow our Teachers to continue their training on Structured Literacy from the New Curriculum.
For our students involved with our school Production as well as our International students, we will be in touch with you directly regarding this day.

Next week we will hold our Open Days, showcasing our facilities and the many and varied opportunities for prospective families that we have to offer at Mount Roskill Intermediate School. We appreciate the involvement of our wonderful students in this event, representing our school well. We are looking forward to welcoming current year 6 students to MRI next year.

Enrolments are now open for 2026. If you or someone you know is planning to enrol at our school for next year, please submit your enrolment forms as soon as possible. This will help us with our planning for 2026.
Please note that Out of Zone enrolments close on Wednesday 27th August 2025.
The same applies for Year 8's moving onto high school. Please get your 2026 enrolments completed and submitted to the High School of your choice as soon as you can.
Our Winter sport continues this term through until later this term. We are proud of the ongoing commitment, effort and sportsmanship evident across all codes. At the end of last term MRI enjoyed success in a number of different sport competitions including 3rd in Central Zone boys Hockey, 4th in Central Zone girls Hockey, and 4th at the Auckland Girls Open Weight Rugby Championship and finally, our Basketball A team won the RYZ after-school basketball league in convincing fashion.

Last term was our highest ‘Regular’ Term 2 attendance in a number of years, 69% of our students attended school above 90% of the time. We saw an excellent shift from our ‘Irregular’ attendance (80-90%) to ‘Regular’ attendance (91%+) . This is the difference between missing less than one day every 2 weeks and 1 day every week. As we did in Term 2, this term each family will be receiving an email that details their child's attendance percentage and number of missed days. This is to help you keep on top of how much school (if any) has been missed. Thank you for your continued support in your child attending school as much as possible. Please contact Mr McBride if you have any attendance barriers you think need addressing.
MRI is moving to a NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM
We are excited to let you, our current school families, be the first to know that from 2026 Mt Roskill Intermediate will have a new look school uniform.

We will be moving to the functionality of polo shirts, more versatile short, pant and skirt options, more garments to include long and short sleeve options, and we are taking this opportunity to refresh our school look to a smart, stylish and modern uniform that our students will be proud to wear. We have chosen more comfortable and better wearing fabrics and design features.

This new uniform will be compulsory for all Year 7 and new Students to MRI starting from the beginning of the 2026 school year. There is no need for current Year 7 students to purchase the new uniform, as they can continue to wear the current uniform next year in Year 8.
From 2027 all students will be required to wear the new uniform.
As styles of our current uniform run out of stock, our new uniform items will start to take their place so we may soon start to see new items around the school.

Once we have images of our new uniform, we will share these with you.
Our Uniform will continue to be available through NZ Uniform for purchase either online or from their Shop in Penrose. Their contact details can be found on our website https://mri.school.nz/uniform/

Our Local MP, Dr Carlos Cheng has his annual Art Showcase taking place this week from Thursday 17th July to Sunday 20th July. This includes artwork that our MP personally selected for his ‘MP’s Choice Awards’. Details of how you can see the art work created from across Mt Roskill Schools is below.
