Whakanuia Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! A powerful reminder that te reo is not just a taonga, but a living, breathing language that endures āke āke āke – a forever language.

The year continues to fly by with Spring now officially here. The last few weeks have been action packed with many different activities taking place including Production, Sports Camp, Language weeks, speech competitions, a multitude of central zone sport days and of course great learning!
Throughout this term and last term, our dedicated Netball players, Basketball and Water Polo teams have continued to play and represent the school week in and week out in the rain, cold, wind and sunshine. As the playing seasons come to a close, I would like to particularly acknowledge the dedication to training and teamwork that has been evident. I am really proud of the efforts of our teams. A special thank you to the staff and the coaches who make these opportunities possible. The support from parents with encouragement and enthusiasm on the sidelines is appreciated. Thank you.

Celebrating Writing Progress: This term, our students have made fantastic progress in their writing! Thanks to the professional learning our teachers have undertaken in Structured Literacy, students are showing greater confidence and skill in crafting sentences. They are now more capable of identifying and naming parts of sentences, using punctuation accurately, and creating clear, well-structured sentences.
This progress has been evident in the way students crafted their sentences in both the Year Seven and Year Eight speech competitions. It’s wonderful to see how these new strategies are helping our learners become more confident and expressive writers.

Our recent production of Aladdin Jr was outstanding with our Cast giving, in our opinion, Broadway worthy performances. We are so proud of all of our students. Each and everyone demonstrated wonderful talent through musicality, dance, performance and humour.
Memories that will last a lifetime have been created. As a group, the cast has been motivated, responsive and reliable.
Special thanks to Whaea Jody Stewart for her exceptional direction and 'Production team' who helped create the magic through a stunning set, sound, lighting and costuming.
Congratulations to our team of students who represented MRI at Sports Camp in Matamata. We are the 2025 North Harbour Sports Camp Runner’s Up. Our students played hard and fair, demonstrating great sportsmanship. Particular highlights include the mixed hockey victory and the boys' basketball win. MRI was awarded 8 trophies and the world's largest stack of 2nd-place certificates, including 2nd overall. We are immensely proud of the team, and clearing over 200 points during a camp is something to be proud of. A big thank you to Deputy Principal Mr Maskell, Miss Golding, Mrs Vashi and our parent volunteers Stephanie and Rachel for all their hard work with the team. We are also hugely appreciative of all the family support we had over the week, both in person and online.
A shout out to Slayd and Aarush, who competed at the AIMS games recently in mountain biking and Badminton respectively. The boys showed resilience, grit, and pride while representing MRI. Aarush placed 1st in the Boys 5th division badminton grade and Slayd finished strongly in the mountain biking. Well done.
Our Central Zone Boys' Basketball team had an outstanding day at Eventfinda Stadium, securing a remarkable third-place finish out of 16 teams. After a strong showing in pool play, they went down by a narrow two points in a very tight semi-final but saved their best for last to win convincingly in the 3rd/4th playoff. A huge Well Done to the boys on a fantastic result!
The Central Zone Girls' Basketball team also competed fiercely, finishing a commendable seventh place out of 16 teams. They started strong, winning their first three games and topping their pool. A big thanks to Dylan Gatti for umpiring, Ehsani Ropati for scoring, and to all the families who came out to support the team.
Meanwhile, our U55s Rugby League team represented Central Zone at the Auckland Rugby League champs. It was a tough day but the predominately Year 7 boys team showed immense promise and improved with every game. We're excited to see what they can do next year!
This wraps up a massive Term 3 of Central Zone sports. We now look forward to more action in Term 4 with Touch, Volleyball, Badminton, and Athletics.
Congratulations to our Year Seven and Year Eight Speech finalists. We are very proud of you all for this outstanding achievement. Special congratulations to:
Year 7: 1st, Jemma Rm 19
2nd, Maanika Rm 10
3rd, Aayan Rm 29
Year 8: 1st, Emily Rm 30
2nd, Amara Rm 8
3rd, Yasmin Rm 22

We’re excited to share that Paris Rm 28 was selected for the Auckland North U13 Rugby League Team! What an amazing achievement and a true testament to her hard work and talent. Paris recently played in the Region of Origin competition. Special mention also to past pupil Seraya Tanuvasa, who also made the team. Well done, girls.

A final congratulations to Jasmine Lai who has qualified for the Chess Power National Champions Trophy on Sunday 26th October. She qualified after finishing as the top girl at an Auckland Regional tournament last month. Well done Jasmine!

Coming up in week 2 next term we have 20 students heading off to Japan to visit our sister city in Munakata City, Fukuoka. This exchange has been happening for the last 25 years and enduring friendships have been formed. Next year we hope to have a group from Japan come down to visit us so we can share all the wonderful things Mt Roskill and wider Auckland have to offer. Keep an eye on our facebook page for our adventures while we are in Fukuoka and Tokyo.

Yesterday each family will have received an email that detailed their child's percentage of attendance this term. This also has the amount of days that students have been late. If you do have any barriers to attendance that you think the school can help with please contact Mr McBride.
