Welcome to all our new families and those who have children returning to our wonderful school. It has been a great start to the school year and fantastic to see so many parents here at the school on the first day.
We hope you and your child found the Pōwhiri welcoming. The students looked fantastic in their new uniforms! Thank you for choosing to send your child to Mount Roskill Intermediate School. We really look forward to working with you.
Our teachers are eager to meet you and we are excited about the year ahead.
We want our students to be happy here at MRI, feel safe, know that they are valued and experience great learning. We will be working hard together for this to happen.
As you may be aware, a new version of the Mathematics curriculum and the new English curriculum are being introduced in schools this year. Alongside this, there are updated assessment and reporting requirements, which we are working through. As a school, we are committed to providing clear and meaningful information about your child’s progress. Regular and ongoing teacher professional judgement, informed by multiple assessment approaches, remains at the heart of the new judgements. This will be used to report on student learning and progress.
We anticipate that there will be further guidance and clarity that we will receive from the Ministry around Reporting. Presently, not all of the assessment tools are aligned to the new curriculum and as such the way that we discuss your child’s progress will change throughout the year as the new requirements and tools are implemented in schools. Although your child’s previous school may have started to use the new assessment language last year, there have continued to be changes which may impact reporting against achievement. An example of this is the four categories from last year now have a fifth one added to them and new progress markers to assess against have been developed.
We will be holding parent meetings to highlight what the new Phase Three Year 7 and new Phase Three Year 8 learning looks like, what has changed and what we are doing as a school to support your child in their learning. As a school we have prioritised additional learning acceleration programmes that will help to support the increased curriculum expectations of the new curriculum. More information will be provided around this.
You may also like to check out the Ministry of Education Parent Portal, that they have developed to support the implementation of the new curriculum (parent portal).
As per the Government requirements on schools, our students continue to have Reading, Writing and Mathematics learning time daily. This will take place as specific learning blocks and will also be explicitly integrated into other curriculum areas such as Social Sciences and Specialisation areas e.g Food Technology.
Along with our great teaching and learning programmes, intermediate school offers many opportunities for students to try new things. There are many sporting and cultural activities as well as areas to help out in such as the library and leadership roles. All of these add to your child’s education, building skills and confidence. It is a busy time of year when students have a lot of information coming at them about signing up for activities. This is a great way to begin to prepare students for secondary school where they have multiple options open to them. Students and families are able to keep an eye on the student notices via our website link: Weekly Student Notices 2026
Please let us know if there is any specific information about your child that we need to know. We can make a big difference to your child's learning when we work together to support them.

We have a wonderful team of staff here at Mount Roskill Intermediate. We all love this school and community and are excited to work with you.
School swimming starts next week. Your child's teachers will let them know the day of the week when they need to bring their swimming togs.
Attendance makes a huge difference to achievement. If your child misses one day of school a week, this means that they have missed 40 school days over the year. This adds up to 8 weeks of school! Clearly this puts their learning at risk. If your child is sick, it is very important that you contact the school via the SchoolsApp or attendance@mri.school.nz to let us know.
Three times a term you will receive a letter that details your child’s attendance percentage for the term, number of days missed and the number of times they have been late.
Cell Phones: You will be aware of government requirements relating to no cell phones in schools.
If your child needs to have a cellphone while travelling to and from school, they are required to hand it in via their classroom teacher for the duration of the day. These will then be kept at the School Office. No cell phones are allowed to remain with a child during the school day. They must be handed in. If a child does not hand a phone in, it will be sent to the School Office and an adult will need to collect it.
If you need to get important information to your child please contact the school office who will ensure that your child receives the information that they need.
If you are visiting the school, can you please make sure that you sign in at the administration area first, and do not go directly to classrooms or into the playground. This is part of our school Health and Safety management. Thank you for your support with this.
We look forward to working with you this year.

As part of our Pōwhiri, our students did a wonderful job representing our school. Included below is one of the beautiful welcome speeches, by House Captain Vaoita. It is shared with her permission:
Kia ora everyone. My name is Vaoita, and I’m a proud Year 8 house captain student here at Mount Roskill Intermediate. It’s a real honour to stand here today and welcome all our new Year 7s, Year 8s, and our new staff who are joining us this year. We’re incredibly excited to have you as part of our MRI whānau, and we hope you will feel supported and ready for the journey ahead.
Starting at a new school can feel different for everyone. Some of you might be feeling excited, others a little nervous, and some a mix of both. But one thing I can promise you is that you’re not alone. This school is a place where you’ll grow, learn, and find people who will cheer you on. You’ll make new friendships, discover talents you didn’t know you had, and learn lessons that will stay with you even after you leave MRI.
One of my proudest memories from last year was being part of the Culture Group. It was more than just performing - it was a chance to express who I am and share my culture with confidence. Standing on stage in front of our school was special, but performing for the wider Roskill community was unforgettable. It reminded me how powerful it is when we come together to celebrate where we come from.
Here at Mount Roskill Intermediate, our values guide us in everything we do: Care / Manaaki, Responsibility / Tūtika, and Respect / Kotua. These values are more than just words. They shape the way we treat each other, the way we handle challenges, and the way we work together as a community. When we show manaaki, we lift one another up. When we show tūtika, we do what is right even when it’s not easy. And when we show kotua, we create a school environment where everyone feels safe and valued.
As you begin your time here, I encourage you to get involved, try new things, and take opportunities even if they seem a little scary at first. Whether it’s sports, culture, leadership, arts, or academic challenges, there is something here for everyone. You’re at the start of a journey that only happens once, so make the most of every moment.
Once again, welcome to all the new members of our school community. We are really happy to have you here. Work hard, be kind, live our MRI values, and enjoy your time at Mount Roskill Intermediate.

Helpful Information for the school year:
Our main means of communication to you comes via email and through our school App. All communication can also be found on our website.
Our School App provider is SchoolappsNZ. See the flyer below with details on how to connect to our app.
If your contact details, such as email address or phone number, change at any stage, please inform the office as soon as possible.
Attendance Children are expected to be in their rooms by 8.50am. Punctuality is important. Any absences need to be explained. If your child is unwell and won’t be in at school for the day, please ensure you report their absence as early as possible through either our Website, School App, by email to the class teacher and attendance@mri.school.nz or by phoning the office on 09 620 8508. You can leave a voice message if you call outside our office hours.
Uniform All students are expected to arrive and leave school in their correct school uniform. Full uniform is to be worn to and from school. Only on the days they have Year sport, can MRI PE uniform be worn to and from school. If for some reason your child cannot wear the correct uniform, they need to advise their teacher with a note or email from their parent/caregiver.
Sun Hats We strongly encourage our students to wear a sun hat while outside during break times and when participating in PE and sport. Plain black caps or bucket hats can be worn. We also sell plain black caps via Kindo for $10 each and we will delivery this to your child.
Naming of your child’s uniform Please clearly name your child’s uniform. This helps us greatly with enabling us to return misplaced garments back to their rightful owner. Unclaimed items at the end of each term are repurposed or disposed of.
School Lunches MRI are a water only school so students are not to bring juice, fizzy or flavoured drinks to school. Your child can bring their own named water bottle or we have hands-free water fountains available for use around the school.
We work with Ezlunch who provide quality, fresh-made food to purchase. If you order by 9am on the day, your child’s lunch will be delivered to the school by lunchtime. Click the link to find out details on how to order and to view their menu HERE
NO Driving onto the school campus grounds For the safety of all our students, as well as our neighbouring Primary and Grammar students, no one is to drive into our school grounds/carpark at the start of the school day or the end of the school day. If you drop off or pick up your child, this must be done on one of the surrounding streets. Only staff are allowed to drive onto school grounds.
Our Denbigh Ave bridge is still closed to vehicles but is currently open to pedestrians. We are working with the Ministry of Education around the bridge replacement. While planning is underway, full works are not expected to be completed until the end of this year.

MRI's New payment system - KINDO
Mt Roskill Intermediate school now uses Kindo as our payment system for all charges, as well as being used for permissions for school activities and trips, so it is important that you set this up for your child/ren at our school. Your Kindo account email must match the email address that you have given to Mt Roskill Intermediate with your child's enrollment, so that both Kindo and our systems match.
Any problems signing up to Kindo, please contact the Kindo help desk on 0508 454 636
